What are you looking for in a rank special herd helper?
  • June events are coming up. Can you tell me what you love to see in a rank special?

    Exceptional producing or not?

What base colors do you like to see?

    What genes get you excited?

What current herd helpers are your favorite?

What would the most useful herd helper for your account look like?

What do you not want to see and why?

These are just some suggestions for the kind of info I would love to know.

  • I strongly do not want exceptionals. If you are breeding the current era it takes away the fun of the creates because they are totally unusable. If you are breeding for anything else you can still use a current-era horse for your program.

I like all base colors but tend to avoid very pale and double dilutes. Anything saturated with sooty and dp is very welcome.

I love seeing DP, S+ and P+. P+ would be very welcome as it is rare still in herd helpers.

I would love to see a "dark and saturated" herd helper with no set E or A status so we can get a wide range of colors from it.

Sorry not currently taking any request for egg/straw/horse sales. Everything I have for sale is already listed.
  • Great questions for making me really think about it!

When I joined I created using almost exclusively xperf/xpro herd helpers, but now I don't think I could use that in June. Since I actually understand eras better now :)) Some favorite HH are Mars and Nightingale, and I feel like dark livers are only growing in popularity. I love my Poppy White, because he wound up Hom DP and Hom sty lol, and wouldn't mind seeing some satin in Era 5.
All in all, I agree with Abhean ;)
  • I have always leaned towards red over yellow, since I felt they were giving me that extra help towards goals for leaderboards and I don't really have the extra IVs currently to boost everything I want to. Though, I see how Era breeders would be so outta luck. :D Bottom line, If I like the base of the herd helper, I'll boost it to make it work for what I want. I'm good with either.

Belton, Sooty +, Kit M and Pangre + on dark bases are my favorite splurges to add on horses when I can lately. (That are not closed genes.) I think there was discussion before about why we didn't have any Kit M on rank specials, but I don't recall all the details. (Or I just think I did) Haha. I

If I could blend Shadow Of Mars, The Dawn of Hope, and Nightingale Song for me, it would be almost perfect. :x
(With some tweaks like, making everything Homozygous)

  • I love ExPro, DP and sooty on an Ee or ee base. My favorite new bonus genes are S+ and W3 and I'm a sucker for chimeras. I also loved the addition of p+ and satin to the herd helpers, but with both being on light or non exceptional bases I didn't seek them out as much.

I think you knocked it out of the park with the herd helpers last December and I would love to see a few return in June. My current favorites are Light in the Dark, Olive Branch, Dove of Peace, Shadow of Mars, Harps of Gold and Nightingale.

I would love to NOT see both Orca and Black Sea on the list together again this June. They are almost identical and neither were in high demand.

It seems like last December was mainly ExPro while last June was mainly Perfect Foundies. I think finding a more of a mix in between would be better suited to ensure there something for everyone!

As far as new herd helpers go, I would be super excited to see p+ on an ExPro dark base or another white gene introduced (maybe W8?!). Both genes I love but don't have much of. I also think nd1 is under utilized in herd helpers right now and hidden on light or hom pearl herd helpers.

Not Dun in the Sun (I'm horrible at these - send help!)
ExPro dark pigmented base for that nice summer tan, nd1 and splotches of W8 sunscreen.

ETA: Also want to add that I disagree that if you're not breeding for eras that you can still use a current era for breeding. After 3 years of only breeding exceptionals I have a lot of money and time sunk into my red/Bs and have strict rules in place to only keep A/Blue second gens with a goal to hit gold/star by 4th. Any yellow/c horses are pretty much unusable for me unless I boost or start a brand new line. I think a mixed bag to include both exceptionals and non would be the best bet.
  • I would argue you can still use them you are just choosing not to. Nothing in the game is stopping you and your lines will not be penalized for using them. You could also boost them if you wanted to. Era breeders are actively penalized for creating expros and can only use them as show horses or to sell for hbs. It's not really the same.

I do agree that a blend is best. :)

  • Truly anyone can use any of the herd helpers, but we all have our own preferences for our herds which is why this game is unique and awesome. I don't really see it as a penalty, but I do view getting a red/b second gen in my herd the same as an era breeder getting an older era second gen. Nothing wrong with the horses and they could certainly qualify for other breeder clubs, but we would likely both choose to alter and use the resulting horses as show ponies because they don't match our breeding goals.

But yes having the option to boost does allow for some flexibility and an advantage for an exceptional breeders! Thanks for the open conversation though and agreeing to a blend of some sort. I know that eras have been a huge focus recently and it's a great way for new players to get a foothold in the era clubs, it's just hard for us old players to let go lines we have put so much time into! :x
  • I wonder if a one off “Black Swan” that is a yellow, but it’s one of those yellows that is really a red. (I have multiple blues that test AGA to golds, which is why I mean by “really a red.” I know it isn’t a red, but it’ll test AGA as a red.) Era breeders would go mad for it and red-based players wouldn’t really notice. It would have to be an extremely rare herd helper, though, or it undermines the whole yellow/era thing.

As a note, for era 5, I’m asking for a fancy non licensed stud and I intend for that to be only intentional era 5 horse. I think the eras are an amazing place for new players to get started and having a player (me) dominate the era boards isn’t good for that.

I wonder if there could be a Baby Breeder leaderboard, where only horses made by a PLAYER under six months old would be listed. At six months and one day the players horses no long get auto-entered and no new horses can be added to the club. I can instantly see a bunch of challenges with the idea but I think the underlying nugget is good.
  • "but it’s one of those yellows that is really a red."

That isn't a thing in the game. :) Yellow is yellow, red is red. No overlap/

  • Personally, I would also like a blend of perfect and exceptionally perfect herd helpers. It keeps everybody happy.

I would like to see the rotation of rank specials that you can get on check in day 6 of the create a horse page either be increased, or at least rotate between a different batch of rank specials every month or few months. The server is pretty flooded with most of those rank specials so there's really no demand for them.

I prefer dark base colors with homozygous Sty, Sty+ or DP. I would want more rank specials that have the really rare genes like DFP1, Gray Reduction, SB2, W3, W8, W10, gp, KP and KP2.
I feel like we have a lot of splash, and w2, and could pass on more of those. I also tend to stay away from those in my lines so that might be why I feel overrun by them.

I also prefer rank specials that are less busy. For example, I don't have much interest in the Color With a Really Long Name, because it also has lots of the genes I am NOT interested in. Like splash, gray or appaloosa. Something like Light in the Dark that has a pretty base color and W3 only is awesome.

It would be just as fun to me to see a bunch of the rare rank specials released again as it is to see new ones.

  • Side Note. Does the Wiki have a page that is dedicated to showcasing a sample image of all of the rank specials?

  • Anything dun. I love duns in all colors. Or a nice blood bay. Or a silver buckskin dun.
  • I love dapples so gimme all the S+ and DP horses. I also love the gradient/contrast that pangare+ and nd1 give to coats so that too :)

I also agree with Ramshorn that the market is flooded with the rotated 6 day check in herd helpers so it would be great to add some variety to those even if it is very rare that the more desirable ones pop up.
  • RamshornSportHorses listed a good group of genes I'd love to see, as well as Pangare+, nd1, and sa. I'd love to see a HH that's hom for the special gene it carries.

TripleGFarm and LadyhawkeStables also listed genes I'd enjoy.

Legendary Lights, New Coke, Shadow of Mars, Silver Black, Pretzel Twist, Holly and Ivy are currently some of my favorite HH.

I'd love to not get w20 or frame, or double dilutes.

I loved seeing the new HHs last December and I am looking forward for what may come in June. I also agree having the rarer HH helpers pop up for day 6 sign in would be awesome.
  • Echoing pretty much everyone so far :)

    Red papered
    Chimera
S+, DP, P+, sa, Bl, snow, gp, KP, KP2, Sun/Sno would be awesome and all the orange genes!

idk how easy it would be but it might be fun to have an "opposites" month where normally yellow papers are red, and vice-versa? i.e. a red Root Beer Float, a yellow Strawberry Moon, etc.

Agree with wishing there was more variety in the 6th day HH rotation.

Really loved December's new RS lineup! You put so much work into not just the genes but the names and meanings, it shows and we appreciate it :)

    *ETA genes I forgot
  • Ohh, just mentioning that I haven't seen an Evergreen hh on this server for awhile. I saw them daily on Forest (which has many more players). Gray reduction would be fun to receive!
  • I would love more chocolate Cupcake horses. I always find it fun to start from. The bottom and work a line up. I will use all colors as I go for quality over color.
  • I look for dark, low dapple, true breeding browns
  • I love, love, love roans and double creams. Pearl is always welcome.

Shadow of Mars and Strawberry Moon are gorgeous so anything saturated with Belton spots is a win. Loud white faces on an otherwise dark horse.

  • Exceptionally Perfect are my favorites.
Genes I would like to see are S+, W8, BI and P+.
    Favorite Herd Helpers:
    - New Coke is one of my favorite HH's. I love Sty/Sty with DP/DP.
    - The Mistletoe and the Solemn and Still were awesome HH's last December, I loved them.
    - Nightingale Songs are always welcome, because of the S+ gene.
    - The Hope of Dawn with the EE, all 4 dark genes and P+ are phenominal.

I am obsessed with liver chestnuts lately; although, I truly love a classic black and white homozygous tobiano.

  • I’d love a Friday with the 1 in 5 Brindle factor on! I got some of my favorite chimeras during Appy Hour on St Pattys day this year.
I’m on the other end- more silver, blacks, Grullo, blue. Although I do love the liver chestnuts too. KitM, W8 would be awesome to see.
  • I love what’s already been said-namely a mix of perfect foundations and ex perfs.

As far as my personal preferences for horses, I very rarely if ever use the cr/cr herd helpers and I try to minimize cream in my lines except for very dark buckskins. Dilutes, including champagne, are not my thing. I also do not breed for Appy.

My lines now are built around Dun and the DFP genes. Silver, roan, Sabino 2 are some of my top accents. I love to see DP, S+, P+ coming around (on the same horse?!) and agree that Nightingale Song, Light in the Dark, Olive Branch, and Hope of Dawn are some of my faves.

Maybe “Summer Skies” sooty silver blue roan, DP, KP/KP2

“Fire of Dawn” Deep red (cherry drop?) with P+

ETA: Belton sprinkling is always welcome!
  • I really like Fox’s summer skies idea. It would be a really pretty horse.
  • Grey reduction would be awesome. I appreciate exceptionals but that's probably because I'm not actively competing. A liver chestnut with belton spotting would be nice to look at.
  • I’d love to see splash 3 on a black base. It’s stunning but I don’t see it a lot. I’m much more likely to add genes to my horses once I discover they are great from a herd helper.

I’d love to see the bright gold that only appears with grey (due to over saturation) with grey reduction on it so they stay that shiny orange gold.

I think it makes sense that the exceptional get the rarer genes, if they are better than perfects. I advocate for a mix. The idea of boosting is good if you are an advanced player but I’m not hbs rich enough to do that often. (In fact, I used my first boost ever this month.)

I think your creativity with the herd helpers is great. I really liked December.
  • Oh, yes! I also love the surprise hour or day long events. I’d like more! White outs! Roan outs! Morning fog (gr)! Mer-horse hour(prl)!
  • I have decided to help promote the new era starting in June any new rank specials I create will be perfect foundations. There will be older exceptional producing rank specials on offer as well mixed in.

I will ditto this idea. The brindle event that I assume was for St. Patrick's day was super fun.

  • Might be easier to tell you what I don't like:
    Regular chestnuts (prefer livers)
    Regular palominos (prefer chocolates)
    Gray
    Champagne
Homozygous Creams Cr/Cr (Double Pearl is ok)

At the end of the day, I like dark base coats. Dun, Roan or Silver on top of dark colors are great too. My absolute favorites are probably Brown Duns and Silver Blue Roans.

    So I am writing down
Brown Duns and Silver Blue Roans for you.

  • I like Brown, Smoky Blue Roans, Smoky Black, Silver Blue Roans, Silver Black, Liver

    *edit*
    I like black based coats
  • On this server, I mostly am looking for a herd helper that doesn't have too much white. Perhaps something that is hom roan, or if possible no w20?
As for base coat. dark with sooty and panagre for the dapples or perhaps het for some dilution gene

  • Dun roan, especially brown or buckskin; silver blue roan; super dark dapple bay
  • I think she’s asking if we want EE/aa or ee/AA or eE/aA or ee/aa or the like.

I don’t have a preference on base color.
  • I prefer the black-based herd helpers. Grullo and pearl especially are so pretty together.
