Who actually rides horses in the real world?
  • I do. I ride a Mustang pony gelding named Oliver. I trained him, but didn't brake him. I have jumped up to 2,3 feet, but an over jump measured to 3 feet :O
It was funny. I jet underestimated because i ride a pony, but yesterday he bucked really hard, then reared so high it felt like we were going to flip over, and i stayed on so I'm an equal to those who ride actual horses. Anyway, just my thoughts.
  • I used to ride. Started riding lessons as a child and rode into adulthood. When I graduated high school I bought myself an APHA gelding. He was a black tobiano. I had him for years and then had to re-home him after my oldest daughter was born. I haven't ridden since. I still miss him and hope one day to be able to ride again.
  • A long time ago I did walk/trot/canter/small jumps/very basics of dressage. I was attacked by a stallion and maybe have some PTSD about it. Haven't touched a horse in over a decade.
  • We trail ride, go on pack trips, and big game hunt using our horses. We have six currently, a mix of full quarter horses and quarter horse x draft crosses. Five mares and one gelding.

A few years ago I splurged on a “fancier” weanling colt that is a quarter horse with some nice cow horse lines. He will be three this year and we’ll be saddle breaking him this spring. So I am hoping to get into some more club type stuff with him. Sorting, reining, or trail classes or something along those lines. We just moved to a new area this year so I will have to see what kind of stuff is going on during the summer near us. Mostly I just want to be in the saddle more and learn some new things together!

  • It takes no more skill to ride the big horses than the ponies and anyone who has been around both will tell you the ponies are far more onery.

  • My grandpa taught me to ride at a very young age and I feel like I grew up in the saddle. I've owned about 10 horses throughout my life, and have ridden countless others. I've trained horses and riders and when I was really getting into it life took a turn. And a few years after that it took another turn and I had to move to Utah, and not bring my horses with me :'( Since I've been here I was able to still ride until about five years ago. A big part of me is missing for sure. However I've recently found two places I can pay to trail ride so I'll be back in the saddle soon :)
  • I ride! I started in 2009 and in 2015 after graduating from high school, I went to college and got my associates degree in Equine Studies with a Riding Instruction focus and also got Equine Massage Therapy certified! I currently own an almost 21 year old leopard Appaloosa mare named Angel (she has a facebook page if you wanna check her out! Angel The Appaloosa). These are photos from this past October at the American Horseman Challenge Association Nationals Competition! I am really hoping to qualify again this year if I can afford it (which I already know I can't but I am gonna try). This is gonna be Angel's last heavily competitive year before I semi-retire her to just leisure/trail riding and small local practice shows once a month in the summers. I really do hope we can do it again but we will need approximately 4-5 thousand dollars (total for summer qualifying shows and Nationals) to make it work :(

  • I used to ride as well, starting in english lessons as a child, leasing a ginger TB mare as a teen, light showing in equitation through college, then while I was establishing my career as a nurse, I schooled horses for my trainer in exchange for lessons.

Unfortunately I developed issues with my lower back from riding that forced me to stop. Physical therapy has helped me get back to normal in my day to day life but every time I have tried to get back to riding, the pain flares up again. Having a healthy back is critical to my physical job as a nurse so I made the decision to stop riding entirely. It was devastating at first, but I’ve come to terms with it over time. Maybe some day I will ride again :)
  • I love reading all of these and 100% agreed that ponies can be way more difficult and ornery than full sized horses sometimes!

I started riding when I was 6 or 7 and showed Arabs all through highschool, but sadly had to sell my horse when I went to college. In college I joined the polo team and upon graduating fell back into my roots and leased two different Arabs, but honestly that type of showing just wasn't as much fun to me anymore.

I just recently moved out to Utah and started taking reining lessons which has been a ton of fun for me and I'm really enjoying learning a new style of riding. I'm hoping to lease and potentially show again this summer! :)
  • It so cool to read everyone’s different experiences with horses <3 I’ve got two horses of my own - a 23 y/o QH named Flash and a 9 y/o Haflinger named Milo. I got Flash (he’s my profile picture) when I was 13 and have had so many fun adventures with him over the years. He has my whole heart. Nowadays his main job is eating cookies! (And he’s very good at it!) Milo I bought with my partner a few years ago. He was an Amish cart horse and wasn’t broke to ride. We thought he’d make a good project horse, but it quickly became apparent we couldn’t sell him and he was the horse for us. <br />
I started riding when I was 11. I took hunter jumper lessons until college. When I met my partner, I started to get into eventing with her. And have been doing that for a few years now. Recently, started to dip my toes into the endurance world and hope to complete at least a 15 mile race this summer! Despite his haflinger body, Milo can really book it at the trot. I call it his “Amish turbo mode”

  • I grew up with horses, but I moved to a city about the same time I became a mom, and just never got back in the saddle.

  • Iv been riding since I was around 7, so quite a few years lol, I own 2 horses, one being Indy (the one in my profile picture) she’s a Qh cross, 17 years old and I mainly ride her, my other horse being Cassie she’s a ottb 22(aka acts like she’s 2) and she’s a dark bay, I’m working into doing evening since it’s super fun and both me and my horse love it much more than arena work, iv jumped 2’9 on Indy (big accomplishment) since when we got her she sat for a good 2 years, I did recently fall off of her and brake my tibia, so that sets us back.
  • I love reading these stories!

I started riding with a sweet neighbor lady when I was about 15, and got my first “barn rat” position when I was 18. Kind of bounced around a little bit after that, even dabbled in Arabs. But since I didn’t really grow up in it, or have “formal” lessons, I eventually made the decision to go ahead and get my Associates degree in Equine Science; luckily the community college had one of the best 2-year programs in North Texas at the time. This allowed me to make connections, figure out what I didn’t know, and get a little bit of experience in the show pen. I worked throughout: did Appaloosas for about 6 months, went back to Arabs for a little while, and then eventually landed working for one of my professors and her husband in reining. I spent about 3 years loping for them, while also working for a Western Pleasure trainer with Paints. I’ve made it out to a few local shows on horses I’ve done the majority of the work on, and it didn’t end in catastrophe so I am pleased. I now have recently switched over to full time with the Paint trainer and the plan is to work out a show lease on one of his horses so that I can get back into the show pen again.

    My two main projects are:
Cupcake, a little bay mare with puppy-dog personality on the ground and “I don’t need your opinion” mood in the saddle. She has an extended trot that is just perfect for the ranch riding. I am close with her because she’s the first one that I’ve done most of the work on.

Wyatt, a big black and white tobiano that was so quirky he had to be sent off to a cowhorse trainer to get some wet saddle blankets for the first couple months under saddle. He’s still quirky, but after riding him for the past year-ish, he’s my good one. He could really go either way, extend everything and do the ranch stuff, or let him stay slow and do the western pleasure.

And of course there’s a couple two year olds and a pair of threes right now.
  • I started riding when I was around 5, and showed leadline and flat classes on a Morgan named Willie. I joined my local 4H club, where I was able to lease a pony to show, a little sassy bay tobiano pony mare named Daisy. I was also taking lessons and showing a mare named Splash. I had to stop riding as much in high school because of marching band and FFA, but after high school I was able to start volunteering at a rescue for off the track racehorses, which I still volunteer at whenever I can. There, I am only one of a few people that does groundwork with them before their trainer gives them their first ride.

I didn't figure out horses in college until I took the horsemanship class, which lets you ride the university's horses 3 times a week. I then was a TA for that class the semester after I took it. After that, my professor got me a summer job at the barn, where I was able to continue riding and training the mare I was working with. Once I was in grad school, I got a job at an eventing barn, where I currently ride and train a couple horses.

But, yeah, my favorite breed is the Thoroughbred, hence my username.
  • I have been riding since I was about nine or ten. I currently ride a bay ottb gelding named Wesson at a lesson barn, doing hunter jumpers and dressage. I also ride a poa gelding occasionally and an Arabian gelding, but I only ride once a week.

Thoroughbreds are my favorite breed, too.
  • I competed at dressage at international level when I was younger, before adulthood and a 'real job' caught up with me! I still escape the city on weekends where I can and steal a ride off my lovely friend but boy I miss it. The biggest blessing of my youth
  • I used to ride a lot when I was younger. Unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity in years due to not having space for a horse where we live right now and not knowing anyone with horses. Hopefully one day...
  • I have an Arab sport horse that I compete with in dressage and over fences. I prefer dressage, he prefers jumping, so we have reached a compromise!
  • I used to ride and miss it a lot. When I visit my sibling Fireflake maybe I can ride their horse.
