When to MOA?
  • I bred my high point mare (11.4) to the highest stallion I could find for public stud (13.3) and got this colt with a score of 10.9.

  • PT and breeding ability are not the same numbers. You need to be using breeding papers, advice, and comparison testing to make judgments about foals. (Or the quality of a horse's offspring.) PT is not passed on, only the ability to make good PT is inherited.

It also is worth noting that this foal is inconsistent, and inconsistency lowers PT scores. This colt might be a worthwhile foal to max out depending on what you want to do with it and how much that PT-lowering inconsistency matters to you. (It can be fixed in the lab.)

  • Just a question. What is MOA?
  • MOA is Max Out Ability.
Sorry meant to ask with more details, but got distracted getting the children ready for homeschool meeting! My goal with this foal would be for my bootstrap breeding, to try to make high quality show ponies.
  • Ammit I appreciate the tips! Does maxing make consistent?
  • Walywoohoo it does not.

If you want a good bootstrap stud you would be better off asking on the forum. You will get a much better stud for much less than the cost of maxing out. People don't tend to list such horses publicly but often ofter them to anyone looking for one.

  • @Walywoohoo I have a *star papered colt that compares AGA to my bootstrap stud if you are looking. I was planning to keep him as a backup, but I should be able to breed another before my boy ages out.
  • Oh good point; I got ahead of myself because I have some "free" GMTs from last month. So I forget how much they're worth! I also am being slightly hypothetical: for instance, why is this colt's PT so much lower than BOTH parents? Is it silly to max a foal who is very close to the parent's score?

@Tarma I'm definitely interested! I have one star stud who is breeding age, and one 2 year old (both grabbed at auction) so don't feel obligated if you would rather keep him.
  • For example, this colt is close to his parents in PT score. Whereas the initial one I posted is WAY under.

  • Combination of random factors, and that inconsistency. As I said it lowers PT. Also, AGAIN Pt is not inheritable. The PT of the parents does not tell you how good of a breeder they are.

  • I've been confused about breeding PT too. Just to be clear - inconsistency lowers PT as in lowers the number? Or just lowers the chance for consistent PTs?

I bred a B papered 9.60 Consistent stud with a Red papered 10.4 Consistent mare & got an A papered 10.20 Inconsistent boy. That same stud with another Red 9.9 Consistent mare created a Red 10.10 Inconsistent girl.

    TLDR version:
    B 9.60 Consistent + Red 10.4 Consistent = A 10.20 Inconsistent &
    B 9.60 Consistent + Red 9.9 Consistent = 10.1 Inconsistent.

    In another breeding:
    B 10.40 Consistent + Red 10.40 Consistent = B 10.30 Inconsistent.

Sorry if there is a wiki or FAQ section that covers this but I couldn't seem to find any.

  • The only thing I remember reading is consistent does not guarantee to produce consistent and inconsistent can breed inconsistent. And inconsistent is only in reference to if they show consistently the same or if they have good days and bad days (inconsistent).

I personally just use it as stepping point for automatic spleds (unless I really like them and I'll modify it).
  • A reminder that maxing a horse is about $750,000 so do it carefully.
  • PT is not inheritable, so you can not say 9.60 + 10.4 = 10.20 you can ONLY say B + Red - A and 10.2. PT tells you how good the line is from the big picture. It can not tell you how good a specific horse is at breeding.

Drop any notions of "breeding" PT and you will be much less confused. You can not breed PT.

  • Ok, got it. Thanks.
  • I think I'm comprehending. Theoretically, a lower PT horse can be a better breeder than a high PT, and additional testing is the only way to check breeding ability
  • Exactly! you got it. :)

  • So, for my education I made him consistent, which brought his PT to 11.6. He only papered at A, so I'm unwilling to do BA after spending the money on him haha. But theoretically, a horse with high PT and lower paper (say A) will not be as good a breeder as a lower PT with star papers? But does "good breeder" imply that they should produce good showing foals?
  • The other colt a posted has star papers, so obviously better. If my inconsistent -consistent colt had tested star, the only way to find the better producer would be comparison testing, right?
  • You could also breed both of them and see which one produces foals with a higher PT. While PT is not inheritable better breeders produce foals with better PTs.

Comparison testing is the much cheaper shortcut to just breeding and comparing.

  • Makes sense! Thanks so much; I know you've heard it before, but you're the best!!

  • I have a good example about breeding ability and PT not being related. I breed long lined horses on Bluegrass, and have been working on PT for awhile. I also have been working to breed my horses right to the limit of what the game allows. So the highest breeding ability possible without boosting.

This stallion is from an extremely long line of horses and has boosting in his line for several generations back. His parents are both boosted 10% past the cap. However that doesn’t affect his breeding ability, he is right at the game limit (cap).

This stallion doesn’t have such a long line as FireWater, only his great grand dam in truly long lined. His sire is 9th gen and great grandsire is 4th gen. He also doesn’t have much boosting in his line, practically none compared to the other stallion. However his breeding ability is practically identical to the stallion above. Comparison testing has some wiggle room. Looking at their PT difference you would never believe their breeding ability is as close to identical as possible.

  • Thanks, what a great example! I appreciate you sharing!
  • I also appreciate you— I didn’t know we could boost past the max.
  • You’re welcome. :)
