Time Wasting Suggestions Needed
-
My place of employment is VERY slow right now. (Thanks to some economic factors we won't go into.)
Whether we are slow or not I have to be at my desk 8 hours a day to answer the pitifully few e-mails, phone calls, or walk-ins that come in. Which leaves me with a lot of non-productive time in front of my computer.
Send me your time wasting suggestions to help me get through the day!
My current list of tactics:
-Obsessing over my HAJ pixel ponies. All my breeding for December is already done. So then it's sorting, culling, planning, tattooing and tacking, etc.
-The usual social media scrolling, watching, commenting.
-Reading e-books on my kindle
-Playing a sorting puzzle. Think sorting different colors of sand across glass bottles. Not sure how far the levels go but currently at like level 250 something...Ramshorn Ranch

Read a book, learn a language with Duolingo?Need to contact me? Read this first.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

Have you tried Duolingo yourself? I've heard of it, but never met anyone who actually used it successfully.Ramshorn Ranch

I use Duolingo with my Spanish students. They either really hate it or really love it. I can 100% tell who does their required lessons though because they're way better in class
You could also find a non-profit you support and see if they need any online help. I know the rabbit rescue I work with always struggles with time sorting things out onlineThanked by 1RamshornRanch -
Have you considered continually refreshing the auction page?Thanked by 1RamshornRanch

Yes, I have used it along with MANY different apps. All language apps can teach you some phrases. It is a good foundation. You can't really learn a language without speaking it to a native though. The best language app I have used is Glossika but it is booooooring. If you want to mess around and learn a few phrases try Duolingo. If you need to learn a language because you are moving to a new country like I am you need more than it can do for you.Need to contact me? Read this first.

@Ammit, you are moving to Bulgaria?
I can also recommend Memrise for language learning. I prefer it over DuoLingo. My friend, who is a surgeon, spoke Ukrainian with a patient today because of lessons she take during her commute to the hospital every dayThanked by 1RamshornRanch -
Can you use your dead time to learn a new skill that can raise your income in the future? Online lessons etc?Thanked by 1RamshornRanch

When my corporate job was slow I started taking on freelance jobs on Upwork. I loved it so much that I ended up starting my own business and quitting full time job. If you have some basic online admin skills you can find a lot of small projects to fill your time and bring in some extra income! :)Thanked by 1RamshornRanch

If you like history, you can become a Digital Volunteer with the Smithsonian! Basically you transcribe historical documents. I did it a lot when the pandemic began. If you like reading and/or history it can be a cool way to kill timeID:3258

@summermonarch, what is your purpose in refreshing the auction page? Is it just to find ponies to bid on?
@herzeloyde, interesting idea. Even if it’s not necessarily career related I can think of a few things I’ve wanted to try to learn or expand my skills in. Art or better hunt training for our bird dog or something like that…
@Ladyhawkestables, good tip! I have never heard of Upwork. I will look into it. I have been keeping my ears open for work from home options for when we have children. Sounds like it’s worth exploring.
@rachrobe, the digital historian thing sounds cool! My church does something similar with genealogical records. I did that a lot in college so maybe getting back into it or looking into the Smithsonian option would be up my alley.
I do enjoy reading, and treated myself to a new kindle paperwhite this fall. So I should have mentioned book suggestions are welcome too!Ramshorn Ranch

To see if anyone has bid against me. I was attempting humor; refreshing is a terrible and pointless habit, which I do constantly.
On a more serious note, you could help academics document all the weird pandemic stuff happening now for future scholars. It is simple— you upload a picture of something and type in some metadata (what is the item, where is it from, etc) and poof. Into the archive it goes.

I read the news. I know more about random stuff than I’d ever like to admit. News.google.com is my preferred news aggregator. It both provides “the news” and also tailors itself to your interests. (In my case, I learn about the petty spats of the British royal family. Did you know Princess Kate wore a tiara with her hair down for the first time last night?)
You could enroll in online classes at a community college. I can’t learn on my own but I can learn if forced to go to class or have deadlines.
Remember your local library (or the New York library) checks out ebooks for free.
When all else fails, there is always minesweeper.

One of my big time killers is Swagbucks. It's like a super slow way to earn a few extra bucks. I either play some games on my phone or answer some survey questions. I basically make enough to cover my husband's gas to work every week (~$30 US) just staving off boredom.
I also spend an unhealthy amount of time on reddit. lol“But I don’t want to go among mad people,” Alice remarked.
“Oh, you can’t help that,” said the Cat: “we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.”
“How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice.
“You must be,” said the Cat, “or you wouldn’t have come here.” -Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Chapter 6Thanked by 1RamshornRanch -
I also spend an unhealthy amount of time on reddit and youtube, but have you considered crochet? If you start with a granny square project you will never need more than one skein of yarn with you a day.

What do you have with you to use at work? Personal laptop? Phone? Other electronic devices? I'm a gamer through and through so I'm pitiful at bettering myself.
For websites there's always the Kingdom of Loathing game you can play in the browser.
If you have access to a personal computer there's a little puzzle game on Steam that isn't that expensive and helps learn Korean Hangul (maybe not learn the language, but learn the symbols)
on my phone I play Bitlife, but I paid the money to get rid of the ads cause boy was it invasive and a battery hog. I'm about 21 generations deep in my current family full of criminals, doctors, and social media stars.

@SummerMonarch, I figured you were being cheeky but wondered if you have a reason you sit and watch the auction page, lol. I will need to look into the New York Library. I am in a rural area, so sometimes there are books that I feel like my library should at least have an e-copy of, but they have only an audiobook or no copy at all! Is there a website or something to sign up for an account? I do love minesweeper, I will add that to my list!
@Vorpalalice, I will look into swagbucks!
@DejaRea, do you crochet? I feel like I would need to find something useful instead of it just being a craft. I really dislike doing a craft project and then feeling like I have nowhere to put it in my house or make use of it after. Suggestions?
@HopeWorldRanch, I have a desktop computer at my desk, which belongs to the company. It's not a large business I work for, so I am sure they somewhat monitor what we do but don't overly care as long as our work is getting done. I do have an iphone, and a kindle paperwhite for reading that I bring to work with me regularly. Can you tell me a little more about Kingdom of Loathing and Bitlife?
Good suggestions from all! I'm glad I asked.Ramshorn Ranch

Lots of things to do if you're bored.

A whole host of citizen research help. I have (among other things) helped map 'fans' and 'blotches' on the Mars surface, helped teach the Mars Rovers to identify different terrains, helped transcribe the War Diaries of the British Army in WW1, helped to identify adverts in old newspapers regarding enslaved people, and, in the wake of natural disasters, looked at satellite images to identify areas needing urgent help.
I use Duolingo. It's not perfect, but it's keeping my brain active. I started off with French, then added German and have recently included Irish Gaelic (very difficult) to my daily dose of brain cell development!HAJ1 White Valley #60847 HAJ3 minimum #175

For crocheting you can always get soft yarn and make throw blankets as gifts, in the person's color scheme. And if you know a simple stich or two you can use old sheets and make dog rugs for your friends with dogs....I did both of these when I was younger. I like practical crafting and if I can give it away, even better, no clutter.
I'm also glad you asked! Ive been wanting to try a couple suggestions mentioned here!
I used to be fairly good at speaking German and Russian and since I don't have my German and Russian friends (and their families) to talk with any more I've completely lost it, I'd love to get it back.Thanked by 1HopeWorldRanch -
Ram, what state are you in?

@minimum, holy cow you have done quite the variety of stuff! I really didn't know about all of this cool stuff that they just crowdsource out to the public. Very interesting.
@LookingGood, I was wondering about starting with some blankets to go in my dog's kennels and on their cot beds. That way I have some guinea pigs if they don't turn out perfect, lol. I will need to wait for a trip to "town" to get some supplies!

I have a phone app called Happy Color that's basically a coloring by number app. There's a ton of themes and some fancy ones where you color with extra textures to each section or there's no lines at all, just the blocks you color in. I like it a lot for when my brain is drained and I need a break. A "simple" picture takes maybe 5 minutes to color in, perfect for a bathroom break.
At home I also sketch, do paper coloring books, and diamond paint. I don't know that diamond painting would be viable in front of a computer, the gems are very small. I crochet, too.
I'll also browse Wikipedia, I call it the rabbit hole game: search a topic you want to learn about, and open in new tabs any links that seem interesting from the article you're currently on. I'll get up to 40 or even 80 tabs open sometimes. This is more of a phone activity because it slows a computer to load so many pages, especially with the images and animations on the articles.Thanked by 1RamshornRanch -
I've been crocheting for 20 years, and I literally own 2 blankets and 2 shawls, because my hunny expressed interest. Every time I finish a project I can think of someone in or around my life that needs a cozy thing. I even passed on my kids baby blankets as they got older. Almost all of my craft related hobbies are things I can give away.Known as Seaswell on HJ1(237808) & HJ2(45120)

@SilverbornStud I do enjoy messing around with graphite pencils and prismacolor pencils. We are building a house right now so all of my art supplies are in storage! I do plan to start back into this once we can unpack.
@DejaRea, how do you feel confident enough people want your work? I think that’s my biggest hurdle. I hate receiving stuff that will just end up being clutter so I feel self conscious giving away stuff that could potentially be considered clutter. Maybe that comes with practice!

I have no fear ripping out a whole project that doesn't make me happy and starting over. Yarn is very forgiving. I also wont use a yarn that doesn't feel good against the back of my hands so people will be inclined to touch it.
I started crochet cause I was hanging out with people who liked to do it while drinking. I made many mistakes and misstarts before I got around to my first blanket. Now I'm taking commissions for full size blankets from parents that have my baby blankets.
I feel like I should add I only actually make about 4 blankets a year, because I go at in spurts. Ut's the bags and pockets and scarves I can whip up in a weekend that see most of my focus.Known as Seaswell on HJ1(237808) & HJ2(45120)
