How To Decide What Horse To Auction?
  • I am having the hardest time lettting horses go and I just need some ideas on what type criteria I should really focus on. I don't always pay attention to breeding advice especially on Gorgeous Horse...mah be a mistake. Also, not sure how many herdhelpers I need to create in order to make over 10K HBs a day, as that seems to be a decent target for the game.Any advice on how to decide what horses to let go would be Greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!!
  • I'm pretty new, but I've been reading a lot, including what the long-term players discuss amongst themselves. I decided to start using breeding advice, because I was breeding poorer foals by ignoring it. You need to keep a bunch of fixed horses to show (and help your daily payout) so it's not the end of the world to spay one because then you get to keep it for showing!
I think you need an obscene amount of horses to be really successful, and I don't want that myself. I'm personally just breeding a decent quality, beautifully colored herd of horses that I'll never have in real life haha.

  • What I do is at the start of each month I look at my 10-year-olds and decide if they have enough points to keep (by all means a subjective measure, but I've heard 500 is pretty standard). Then when I breed my foals I auction every foal under 10 PT score, and most of the ones that don't pass BA unless they have a high ish PT for that generation. I do sometimes make exceptions for Best in Pasture foals because they'll be the best breeders from that crop of foals. I try to be more strict with my colts than my fillies, because I need fewer stallions than mares.
For context, I've been playing for a little over a year, have about 1,300 horses, and make just under 20k per day.

  • I went and looked at your barn and I’m curious about how many stallions you have. While they are very pretty, you only need one stallion for like every twenty mares. I think you have more stallions than mares. I’d geld a whole bunch of them.

I encourage you to keep everything with more than 400 points, if not everything. Show your horses twice a week to make that number go up. The bigger the number, the more payout. One horse with 800 points is the same value as two 400 point horses, if thinking about barn space. Spayed or gelded horses make points faster.

I keep horses I like, even if they fall outside my “keep” criteria. Future me often gets rid of them but I don’t auction anything that makes me happy. After all, we are doing this to have fun and there is no one right way to play.

  • Because I'm into specialized Gene's, most of my foals I auction off. If I have a pretty horse that doesn't make the BA cut, then I'll keep them. Usually my ultimate goal ponies, like axiom cyan, or axiom blue or axiom green. I've also kept watercolor ponies if they're pretty. So over time I accumulate enough ponies to offset my spending. As for my breeding stock, 90% don't make it. Stallions I'm much more hard on cause I don't hardly need as many stallions as I need mares. Usually it's the best stock. As for mares,if they have the genetics that I like or could use to get what I need, I usually keep, but majority aren't it. I also have foundation breeders coming in and producing new blood to my lines. So to conclude, it's all about what you're after. Stick to few stallions, and have a whole barn full of show ponies, strictly for showing.
  • One thing I would pitch in is to decide how YOU want to play to make yourself happy. If you want to ignore breeding advice and just breed for color there's nothing wrong with that. The great thing about this game is there's no way to "win" the game or play it the "right" way. You can take other player's advice if it sounds good, or not, if you don't like it.

The only caveat with that is that the more points you have, the more income you will make. Which supports breeding more pretty ponies. So I would take that into consideration as you are downsizing your herd.

  • Wow!! Thanks, so much to All of You! That was Alot of Great Information! And @SummerMonarch wow, thank you for taking the time to look through my ridiculously unsorted barns and pastures! You are so right, I have a ton of Stallions. I keep hoping I get the perfect one so I can get a ton of foals from him but keep forgetting how Important having a wide variety of mare can be even if they can't give me instant gratification over and over again in the same amout of time as a stallion. These are all great strategies and now I atleast have an idea of how to start to auction and sale my horses!

    Thanks again!
