What makes a good Show Herd?
-
Not sure if I'm posting in this in the right place.
I'm trying to understand what makes a good show herd. Is it just the # of PTs and Points? Should I be looking at Daily Payout and Lifetime Payout? I know consistency matters but my highest paying (Daily payout) is an Inconsistent test grade of 6.90 https://mesa.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=1577366
Basically what is your criteria for culling your show herd? -
I messed up my first forest account, so on my new accounts I’m starting fresh with only creating exceptionally perfect horses to be my show herd- they will all be pointed yearlings and snipped.
I’m using only exceptionally producing herd helpers to start producing show foals- so I create them 3 or 4 years and stick them in pasture. This will be my first crop of foals, so anything that tests superior I will keep intact for the next generation, anything else will be snipped and placed in a show barn. I don’t plan on selling/auctioning off anything until the oldest turn 10Thanked by 1SunflowerHill -
So once you do start selling what will be your criteria?
-
PT is how well your horses will earn points. Points make you money. They are related but not the same.
-
Once they’re 10 years, I’ll cull anything that has less than 500 total points, if they’re good show horses they should have more than that.

Size. The bigger the better. :)Need to contact me? Read this first.

Or the smaller the better. I like a mix of both, with a few medium boned in there just because they look exceptionally pretty to me. And that goes for height, too. Riding horses and ponies, and drafts and cobs, with some warm bloods and sport ponies just because.

I think that when Ammit says "size" she means the number of horses/ponies in your show herd. More horses = more points = more money.
Obviously we do not all have unlimited barn space, so if you have to cull I would probably keep anything with more than 500 points regardless of age or PT. For under 500 points look at a combination of their age, PT and total points. A young horse with a higher PT will be a big earner later, so is worth saving. Older horses that have a low PT and not very many points are taking up stall space.
Benchmarks for your cutoffs are going to depend on your herd. Right now all of my breeding stock are C/Yellows or B/Reds so most of my babies are 9.5-10.7 PT in a breeding season. I auction any baby with a PT below 10. As I get better breeding stock my PT range will go up, so my benchmark for babies to keep for showing will go up as well.Ramshorn Ranch

Thank you.
For now I think I'll keep everything till my oldest turns 10 like Coppilane mentioned and then start culling anything below 500 pts like you mentioned.
Thank you again. -
Personally I would keep a range of PT scores. The 9.5 to 10.5 will rise up the classes at a slower and steadier rate thereby earning as they go. Higher PT scores rise up the classes faster and may not stay long enough to make much money as they go, but will reach the higher classes and potentially make more money then. By having a mixture of lower and higher PT scores you get the best of both worlds. Like Ammit said - lots of show horses!HAJ1 White Valley #60847 HAJ3 minimum #175
