Who's the keeper?
  • Can I ask which stallion you would keep for a cob breeding program, and why?

  • I do have another ExPerf stud, homozygous dun and sooty, ee Aa, one copy cream, similar stats. With that in mind, which "Beach" should I keep?
  • It depends on what you are breeding for- some people will keep the 1st, some will keep the 2nd and some will wash both out.

If you are breeding to increase bone, choose the stud with heavier bone. If breeding for taller or smaller foals, look at their height.

Personally because I breed for bone and getting my color genes fixed as quickly as possible, I’d choose the 1st one because he is homozygous at extension and agouti on both strands. That guarantees every one of his foals will be bay based regardless of the mare he is put to. They of course can have modifiers depending on the mare they are put to. His foals will also be either roan or w1 with 50% chances at splash and DP. Depending on the mare, I can easily end up with a crop of foals already homozygous for several alleles and the next generation can be more focused on breeding in and fixing other desirable genes.

I’m leery of w1 because it does not play well with other white spotting so would be very cautious of the mares you put in with him- w20, roan, and tobiano are “safeish” but other w spotting patterns are highly likely to result in dead foals depending on the gene combo and white factor inherited.

  • Good points, thanks! I like variety in colors, rather than fixed, and I'm trying to breed for consistently heavy cobs. So I'll keep the first, I believe. I also forgot that letal white is a factor; I appreciate the realism of the game!
