PT vs Points
-
Hi, I’m confused as to how PT and points work. I have one horse that has a PT of 10.40, entered one show, has 976.5 points, and has earned 47670 hb. The other has a PT of 12.10, entered multiple shows, has 96 points, and has earned 3320 hb. I thought that higher PT would lead to more points and hb, but I must be wrong. Will someone explain to me? Thanks

A higher PT horse will rise up the show rankings faster. They will spend less time at each level and if they are at a lower point in the classes each time then their lower place will accumulate fewer points than a horse that moves at a steadier pace.
For example. Let's assume that your 10.40 horse rises by 3 places each time they enter a show and that the show has ten places (this is a very simplistic example but it might help to understand). Let's say that the horse places 10th, and therefore last, the first week, the following week they place 7th and get some points and winnings. Next week they are 4th and the following week 1st and so get more points. The next week they have moved up a class and place 8th, and so on. They spend about three weeks at each show level.
Now take your 12.10 horse. This one will rise at a faster rate. Let's say it rises 6 places each week. The first week it places 10th and last and gets nothing. The following week it places 4th and gets some points. Then it rises to the next class and places 8th, very little in the way of points. Then 2nd and a good amount. Then it's up to another class again and places 6th - but the following week it's up again to another class and places 10th. It's not staying long enough at each level to get a steady income.
Once a horse starts to reach it's limit in training (around the same age as it's PT score) it will slow down and then stop rising up the shows. You have to hope that your horse stops in the top half.
I hope that helps a bit.HAJ1 White Valley #60847 HAJ3 minimum #175

Thank you! That helped a lot

Also, if your 10.40 PT horse is a foundation, it could be a pointed create, which means it was "born" with most of those points and earnings. The 12.10 horse is definitely a lined horse, so it was "born" with no points or earnings.

@Blackowlkingdom - If you have a question like that again where you have a specific horse in mind, posting a link to the horse or horses in question might help us to provide a better answer to a query. But I'm glad my answer helped. :)HAJ1 White Valley #60847 HAJ3 minimum #175

This is all assuming that the horses have all been trained every week and never missed. If you buy a horse that was listed publicly you can't be sure they were trained at every opportunity.
