Basic upgrade you can use straws, and embryos. The embryos will have to be made in the mare, you can make an embryo every 5 days. I can go into more detail if you wish.

Premium upgrade, is when you can use eggs. Eggs can be pulled every 5 day with a possible flush at the end of the month.

I personally have played the game for around 4 years, most of that time I played exclusively on a Basis account. So playing the game is very doable without the premium.

I have never tried buying straws or eggs without the correct licenses.

It is possible to get a basic upgrade without paying real life money. You just need to save up enough HBs to purchase 30 IVs and then trade in those IVs for a 1 year basic upgrade.

I was able to earn enough HBs for a basic upgrade relatively quickly by doing the Achievement Tasks and saving up the funds for an upgrade instead of spending it all on creates or expensive horses for sale.
