Stallions that have passed sba
-
I’m breeding for eras. In era 2 and 3 I have multiple (seven? ten?) colts that have passed sba and who seem alright. I’d like to have maybe three or four. How do you personally pick between them? Some even have the same gene set. I know I can comparison test them but I’m getting a lot of “about as good as” and that doesn’t really help at all.
I’m not really looking for game rules as much as I am your personal strategies for picking which stallions to keep.
Thank you for your time and thoughts. -
I run into this issue a lot. I start by comparison testing all against the sire and only keep superior. From those I check and see who has the most of the genes I breed for, and the correct height I want. If I still have too many left, I'll look at who has the higher PT score and will choose consistent PT scores over inconsistent.
I also sometimes compare them against other colts in the same breeding project and see if I like them better than the others for genes, etc. I try to only have three or 4 in a division total, and only 1 per sire (2 on some rare occasions) -
Doesn’t BA on colts geld everyone who isn’t superior to sire? Or do some colts get “close enough” to pass BA but still comparison test lower than dad?
-
They get "close enough" and can still be AGA or or superior to dad (same with mares). SBA gelds any who aren't at least close, and BA is a bit more forgiving and allows them to be slightly worse.
-
Another thing I left out when testing as well is paper levels. I allow B/Red for gen twos, but gens 3s must be A/Blue for me to keep.
I am a cold, ruthless culler. :)) -
SBA gelds colts that are particularly worse than sire, so they can still be as good as, and even one point worse I think. I geld all C papers for gen2, and then comparison test the rest to a ExPro or ExPerfect stallion. Most colts are as good as the ExPro, which will be be superior to their C papered sire, but I get an occasional one that is superior to and ExPro. So I keep him.
For ExPro breeding, all gen2 colts must be A papered. For me that is. I don't have to comparison test them. I only use an ExPro for comparison testing for the others to reduce the amount of tests I need to do -
if you have a mare and she is full 30 day pasture bonus. then breed her
and she has a 10.40 pt foal
then you test the foal against the mare and she only comes up AGA
does that mean the foal can only throw a foal no higher then 10.40
just wondering -
All my studs must be superior to sire, consistent and hom DP at a minimum and then I pick the ones with the coolest genetics. I also had to start making up rules for certain generations. Nowadays all my second gens must be A papered and all fourth gens must be star papered!

I've had one of my foundation stallions throw a lot of colts this year who are all coming out AGA each other, so I'm going to use my PonPon GMTs to swap them into mares as I like a lot of their gene combinations and am lacking in intact mares.**Wensum Valley Ponies**
