What causes dapples?
-
IRL I was taught dappling appears when a horse is healthy and things are good. On here, there must be some kind of genetic component that I can’t figure out. What causes a horse to have dapples? Example below.

On that foal, it's from the silver gene. S+ can cause it too. And I'm not certain, but I think hom sty and hom DP can also cause it sometimes.Thanked by 1SummerMonarch

MULTIPLE things can cause dapples! I have so much to learn…
(Thank you.) -
And then there are champagne dapples. I'm not sure if they have the same cause or not but they are darker than the rest of the coat instead of lighter. Here's and example

From what I've noticed, I think champagne dappled are luck of the draw. On bay/chestnut based horses without silver, sooty and dp will increase your chances of dappling! I've also noticed more dappling on DP/sooty buckskins and palominos, so I think cream can play a part if the coat is pigmented enough.ID #242

Dapples are semi random but more common on darker pigments. You can reroll or "get a new seed" for a horse to try for dapples or you can buy s+ which gives dapple most of the timeThanked by 1SummerMonarch

There also seems to be a creme component. I just started breeding for dapples last month, and het creek with hom sooty seems to make dapples, but hom crème is too much.Thanked by 1SummerMonarch
