For those of you who didn’t spend real money, how long did it take you to build up your herd enough to have a decent income?
I feel like I don’t have enough barn space to be able to keep my foals and still make any money, so I end up having to auction what will be good future show ponies in favor of pointed creates. The problem is that now my daily show bonus is about 1600 (the Sunday pay day helps) so I’m losing money by the time I create and do some mild testing.
Is this just something that takes time, and will get better as my pointed creates increase in points? Or am I missing something?
Thanks for your help. -
I find the first year the hardest. You are still learning how to establish a income, and there is a steep learning curve involved in deciding what your goals are for that account. I honestly found at least when I was starting out, and it still holds true.
The best way to have something to do every time you want to play is to have multiple accounts. You can have up to 3 free accounts per server that's open, and as many paid accounts as you want. I started with 3 accounts on forest. I very shortly upgraded each to basic, and just logged into whichever one had money when I wanted to play for a bit.
This allowed me to focus on different things on each one to practice ideas for what I wanted.
I've since added an account on bluegrass and this is a second account mesa. Each has it's own theme. Sometimes when two accounts are big enough, or I loose interest in an idea I merge them.
Also... Shop for 9 & 17 year old show ponies in the auction if you are on while it's running.10869

Okay, thank goodness it’s not just me. I keep feeling like I’m hitting a roadblock of wanting to do xyz to make money, but it costs money to do xyz. I’ll look into the multiple accounts, maybe that will help.
Is there a reason for 9 & 17 year old show ponies specifically? -
9 is the oldest you can get for minimum action price so they are poised to grow into their income. 17 because while it's a gamble they will only last this month. It's only 1 in 5 they will age out so most likely you will at least double your investment.10869

It usually takes about a year. A couple accounts are nice, so you can play around a bit and figure out what you like.
As an old player starting a new account, I figured out my breeding goals. So I wanted to breed black satin horse and get them to the breeding cap, and win awards with them. I also knew I needed a 1k barn. For show horses to give me breathing room for first starting out. Then I set about saving the hbs/Ivs to buy that 1k barn and 40 Gmts, plus a nest egg of about a million.
I didn’t do much if any breeding until I got my black satin stallion created. Then I put 50 black mares in the pasture and bred them once a month.
To get those funds, I puppy milled horses. Ammit frowns on that practice which I didn’t know at the time. I sold pointed creates on my other accounts on older servers. Now Mesa is well enough established you should be able to make a decent amount selling pointed creates. I always made yearlings when I planned on selling them. I also sold them for 1/3 their lifetime payout. Yes it’s a little under what other players sell them for, by my thought was the faster the turnover the better. Plus an older player is more likely to go for the horse they can make the most money off of in the long run. I made a lot of form posts to sell those horses faster. Horses made from, exceptionally perfect, great show horses, perfectly consistent, or others like that always seem to sell the best.
The only testing I did on the horses was BA, another reason to sell them at 1/3 their total payout. An older member is more willing to take a gamble.
Edit to add for me I found when I actually started getting ahead and feeling like I had extra money to spend was when my show horses, breeding horses ratio was good. For me a 5/1 ratio is a minimum. Five show horses for every breeder. The show horses pay for you to breed your mares, buy a stall for foals, and do testing. I once did the math, I think the average mare costs around 7,500 every month you breed her and test her baby, plus putting the funds aside to buy that baby a stall in a barn.
Ammit is currently asking questions on the FB page about making the game more workable for newer members. I’m sure your input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you! That was a really helpful explanation. I think I’m realizing that pet of my problem is I’m horribly impatient. The breeding is my absolute favorite part, so I think I overdid it off the bat and then I get emotionally attached to the foals and they just end up taking up barn space.
I’m getting a little better at culling now that I have my objective (16+hh dappled heavy warmbloods) so that’s making it better. But I haven’t had any luck selling, even when I go with the “make an offer” approach! Now that pointed creates are much higher in value I imagine I’ll have trouble selling my ladies that are 200ish points, so I may just auction them and try with new creates. -
The “make an offer” selling approach rarely works. I’m lazy, I might love the horse you have for sale but if I can’t buy it right now, 75% of the time I’ll leave it and not make a offer. I know plenty of players who have the fund’s to buy any horse they want feel the same way. Also selling horses besides pointed creates is difficult and not a sure bet. Everyone breeds different things on the game, so finding a player who is interested in your babies, is kinda hard.

That’s really good to know, thanks! I figured it would be hard to sell the ones I bred, but was surprised the pointed creates weren’t going. That’s very helpful.
