Foals
-
Since I am pretty new and I am starting to breed my horses.
How many foals do you keep from a breeding season to the next? Do you just keep a set number? or Do you keep just your best foal from your pasture(s)?
Or do you keep the best pointed ones? or just the colors/genes you like?
I am curious what everyone does.

It kind of depends person to person. The cool thing about H&J is that you can kind of do whatever you want with your breeding. Personally, I mostly breed for the genes I'm looking for. I tend to keep a lot of my mares, but am a lot more picky about stallions. A lot of people breed generations- like they have a set G1 (foundation), then separate G2, G3, etc. When kept even like this, it's called an Even Pedigree. Having an even pedigree seems to have some advantages in terms of breeding predictability. Most of the horses I breed don't have an even pedigree and that's fine too. The "Horse search" is a great tool to look up what you might be interested in breeding for:)ID:3258
