  • I would imagine that everyone here loves and appreciates the HAJ game. I myself have an addiction and have a hard time not collecting tons of horses. So in that respect I really need to keep myself in check any advice is much appreciated!

    1) How to you refrain from doing the same thing since there are so many options to breed for?

    2) What are your personal deciding factors for keeping and culling?

    3) How do you know you aren't throwing away a great stallion, mare, or show pony?

    4) That all being said I need to get a grip on my herd and would like to share so please give me a list of 5 and I will send you one of them or share eggs/straws!

    Thanks in advance :D
  • 1. At this point I have a few specific lines and everything else I just kind of mish mash all together only paying attention really to paper level. It's a mess!

    2. Generally on this server at least I want a PT score over 10 and I don't keep 2G foals who are papered C or yellow.

    3. SBA, performance testing and papering.

    4. I'll look and see if you have anything I want l want later and thanks for the offer!

  • 1) I pick a few "hard and fast" color rules for each server and make myself stick to them regardless of how pretty and shiny the horses may be. On both servers I breed for light boned and start with ExPro/ExPerf foundations, but on here I look for horses are ee sty sty with DP and on Bluegrass its Ee/EE sty sty with silver. On Bluegrass I also do watercolor, Nacre and chinchilla which is a ton of fun. I really like having the different goals on different servers, it helps keep my mind organized and keep both lines in check and prevents me from collecting alllll the RS. :))

I also really try to focus on increasing the quality of my horses with each generation so that plays a huge factor in which horses I alter. I started out by keeping everything that passed SBA and was "consistent" intact, once I got more funds I started comparison testing all of my studs and only keeping superior intact. Last month I was finally able to get through comparison testing all of my mares too and only kept superior intact. Now I am slowly thinning out my red papered G2 mares by keeping only those that are hom DP and superior intact.

    2) I try to keep as many show ponies as I can, but I do cull any that are inconsistent. Last month I had also started auctioning off all foals with less that 10.8 PT, but after reading this thread on Bluegrass, I am going to try and keep even more of youngsters and focus more on auctioning off the leveled off horses over 10

    3) Again I really try to keep as many show ponies as I can and for some reason it's a lot easier for me to alter a nice mare/stud that doesn't quite meet my goals if I know they will stick around in my show herd. I was also super pleased with how many mares I was able to sell in my most recent post instead making them as show ponies, so I guess offering them up to the community first is another great method!

My favorites of yours are these three and of course their side/grand sire!

  • I used to literally keep anything that passed BA, hardly put any focus on altered show horses, even if it was the exact opposite of what my very loosely defined goals were. This account is still tiny and brand new, but my other accounts I obviously grew too big, too fast without a sustainable income. From there, I started trying to gather up high PT show horses, doing SBA, and altering things that didn't fit what I really wanted. I still need to do quite a lot more of that. As someone else mentioned, Bluegrass has a great post about how profitable the second gen show horses can be, so between trying to get my high PT show horses, I've also started focusing on keeping altered lower gen horses too. I can kind of keep everything now and it will still be useful.
2 times a month, I try to weed out poor breeding quality or poorly showing horses that I have something similar, but better, of. I shoot to get rid of at least 5 each time. Slowly getting things under control haha! I always have to remind myself not to just keep everything to breed, or I'd have a thousand different lines going all over.
That being said, I'm absolutely in love with this mare of yours or anything like it!

  • 1) The only thing the 3 servers have in common for me is I hope their bay allele is brown. On this account, I want heavy and sty with a spotted butt. On bluegrass, I want tiny sables with minimal white, heavy on tobiano. On forest, I want all the colors of the rainbow mixed with all the fancy genes as heavy as I can get. My forest bootstrap herd has even fewer rules.

    2) If it makes me happy, and passes testing, it goes in my herd. If it makes me happy and it fails testing, it goes in my show herd. If it doesn't make me happy, or it's too cute to snip for show, it goes in auction. If I see an ISO that is looking for something I have, I love selling horses cheap out of my broodstock. I can always make more.

    3) I don't know. I hope if I sell them, they do well in their new homes. I'd much rather a breeder finds a new home than spend 6 years doing nothing in my barn.

    4) I don't need anything thank you, but if 2-3 open gene straws jumped in my freezer I'll use them.

Last notes, Forsest is my big account. I found the best thing I ever did for my daily bonus once I got above 3000 horses was to give myself a barn stall cap. I recently bumped it up to 5200 stalls because I was having a hard time accommodating all the foals after buying two pastures, but having that limit means I cull my older show horses much harder to make everyone fit by the end of the month. Every couple of months I have to weed one generation of mares or another, but that's a much smaller job than having to look at all my mares.

  • Thank you for the thoughts and ideas :D
  • Thank you for the straws and eggs and for prompting an excellent discussion! :D

  • Oh yes I might add once every season I go through my 10+ year old horses and auction the ones that leveled off in a bad spot or just don't perform well and aren't good for breeding. Space is always an issue so unfortunately I can't keep them all into old age.
  • Thank you for the straws! Now I need to pick out mares before pastures autorun.
