Managing and growing your showbarns - what is your process?
-
Hey folks I thought I’d get a thread going on what everyone does to manage their showbarns. What is your strategy, are they organized, when do you sell, etc. I’m curious to see what others are doing, how we can help newer barns get going.

I keep geldings and spayed mares separate. Obsessively. Not sure if it helps me in any way :DThanked by 1Khisanth

I just bosh every horse I breed into a barn, show everything until they hit 3.
I then try and remember to put maiden mares in paddocks, but that sometimes doesn't happen though.
Mares that I have finished breeding from when they are over 9 years old go from a pasture into a Retired Mares barn and start showing. Some of these are doing pretty well on the leader boards for me at the moment, but that will change when June rolls round.
I took me a long time to build up my show string by only breeding from foundation. I've been playing just over a year (actively) and have only just hit over 50khbs daily pay-out.
It's a difficult one for how to help newer players out, because what they want is a decent quantity of levelled off, well placing show horses that have a good daily pay-out. These are the horses that we all want to keep, unless we all start feeling super generous next month and gift them out.
Otherwise it's buy high PT foals in the auction and wait half a year before they start really earning.**Wensum Valley Ponies**

Breed a bunch, alter a bunch, throw them into a barn, and forget them forever. Also, get high-pointed horses from the auction and Foundation Rescue.
Absolutely no strategy or organization whatsoever, just keep as many horses as I can. :D
And obviously, show everybody 2x a week (pasture mares too, if I remember).
I don't sell anyone unless I'm low on space. In that case, I look through my 10+ yr olds and start auctioning them by lowest points first.
edit: when I'm not selling horses (because I have space), I have noticed an exponential increase in my daily payout, even though I do not actively look for pointed horses, I only use my altered foals.DarkPhoenix #15470 (she/her) ~ Premium Upgrade
Barns always open! -
I’m probably over organizing, but it soothes my brain to sort horses. :D
I train everything every week twice. Including pasture mares. Usually on Sundays depending on where the 28th lies in the week.
I have my show barns organized by points. once or twice a month I reorganize the barns as horses earn more points.
On the first of the month anything 10+ with less than 500 gets auctioned. This generates a nice chunk for breeding plus frees up space for higher point horses.
Everything in the show barns is gelded/spayed except for a few select 9 yr olds that will be auction at 10 (rank specials usually ).
I check the Sale and auction page daily for anything with at least 100 points that is under 10. Anything not needed for breeding gets altered and sorted into a show barn.
I try to sort and cull foals as I breed, doesn’t always happen so I have one big barn that collects the ones I haven sorted.
When pasture mares turn 10, they either get altered and moved to a show barn (if over 500) or Auctioned if less.
Since I started this process I have noticed a significant increase in daily payout, without having to add a lot of high pointed horses. I’m at 579k right now which is a good spot, so I’m not actively focused on growing it.Thanked by 1StarBarKRanch -
I have an overly-complicated system (mostly because I'm comparatively small-time compared to some of you guys LOL) in which I cull at the end of each season based on horses' daily earnings with a sliding scale for age.
Eventually I think there will need to be an economy of scale installed here and will probably adopt something a little easier to scan at a glance, more like Khisanth's system with overall points rather than daily rate, and maybe have enough storage for horses in training that I can keep all of them and just cull at age 10 rather than age group by age group.
But for now, this is working for me!Thanked by 1Khisanth -
I have a futurity barn for each season for foals that are futurity qualified, but weren't necessarily up to snuff to join the regular show string either consistency or PT wise. At the end of their 5 year old year when they age out of the futurity program I sort through what's there and rotate the ones that are performing well points wise into the show barns and auction the rest.
For the rest of the show string I have separate show barns that hold all of my spayed mares and geldings. I'm at the point that when I get full I am trying to buy a new barn instead of cull horses. I've decided at the end of the day the best way to grow the daily income amount is just to keep more show horses. Any strategy beyond that is just little tweaks but the biggest bang for the buck/time spent is just to keep as much as possible.
When I do my breeding I look at all of my spayed mares/geldings for each era and cut out the inconsistent ones (just my personal preference, ultimately I know there is not a logical reason not to keep them), and I also cut out ones that have an unusually low PT compared to my best PT foal for that era that month. Everything else gets chucked into the show barn.
Near the end of the month I look at all show horses 10+ and auction anything that doesn't have 500+ lifetime points. I also look at all show horses 10+ and auction anything that hasn't accumulated 15+ points this year.
My thought is that I can get a decent little auction payout since they are over 10 and those particular stalls might be better used by a more productive show horse that is accumulating more points per year or has more lifetime points.Ramshorn Ranch

Ramshorn, that is some excellent advice that I will be taking. Everyone has really good tips here. Thanks y'all. For the most part, I just try to fill up on show horses to keep my payout rising.Hi! I go by Delta! They/Them pronouns. You can find me on Forest under deltaghoulette (#60921)

I just keep everything that I breed.
At 10 years old I go through and auction anything with less than 400 points. -
Breeding:
I don’t get a lot of foals from project breeding. All of my projects are bred with the 45 day bonus from pasture surrogates, and that’s expensive, so I only breed what I need to get a solid next generation. I have 3 projects, and I breed about 10 foals from each project when they are old enough. Stallions go from the project barn to the Stallions only barn after their project breeding is done. Mares are moved to the mare barn or primary barn if there isn’t any room in the mare barn. Any foals that don’t pass the list of tests and comparisons are altered, I only keep 1 stud colt and 1-3 fillies per project.
Most of my show ponies come from futurity breeding. I bootstrap to my heart’s content there and all colts are gelded, fillies are put through sba. Once awards go out when they are 5, geldings and spayed mares are moved to one of my show barns.
My futurity barn is 250 stalls, I split that up into 50 foals bred per month.
Showing:
I have my barns split into altered-in training and altered-leveled off. Both categories are split between several barns that are sorted by age. At the start of each month, I go through the oldest in training barn to find any horses that have leveled off and move them to the youngest leveled off barn. At the end of each month, after awards, I go through my leveled off barns to see who gained less than 10 points in a month. I have seen multiple leveled off high earning horses suddenly go up a show level and start placing really low, decreasing the points earned. Total points is not important to me, it’s where they have leveled off at and if they are going to increase their worth after they are done training.
I also have an extra barn that I use for pasture mare showing, I show all of my pasture mares. When they aren’t in the barn, I use that barn for sorting foals.
Selling:
I auction any altered and leveled off horse that has gained less than 10 points in the last month and is more than 10 years old. I could probably increase that point threshold, but I want to keep as many horses as possible. I only withhold a horse from auction if they are 18+ years old and might die at rollover anyway, but I mark their name with a $ at the start. -
For those of you showing pasture mares... if you remove, show, and return mares to the pasture on the same day, they don't lose their accumulated bonus, correct?
