E8 Culling Help
  • Hi!

I’m currently sitting at 20+ E8 1-2 yr old stud prospects and they’re all even bred C/Yellow and most are either open genes or DFP2/Mu/SWM and almost all of them are A or AA for the height regulator gene.

I’m looking for help figuring out who to keep and who to sell or give away (I would love to offer some colts as compensation for advice/help choosing).

Ultimately, I’m looking to end up with a max 10 colts/stud prospects and I’m listing what I’m looking for below.

I have two different goals right now with my E8 lines; My Mini Winnies (most are marked with A/AA or MFL in their names) and my Big Boys (marked BFL or anything that is draft/heavy weight/boned). Another perk would be help with which non-LB eligible colts to keep (looking for 1-3) that I can keep just for pretty foals for showing/etc.

Please feel free to PM me for any clarification, I appreciate the help getting into eras in advance!

Ps. If you see a horse you would like and are working on E8 please let me know, I’m happy to give some out or make deals if you prefer
  • Depends how competitive you want to be on the leaderboards. Are you trying to win awards in the era, or just want to enjoy the new era.

If you want to be competitive you can start by gelding anything that isn't 2 already. Only the colts born last month will be competitive. That would be a quick way to reduce numbers.

The best way to find the best colts is to use a testing benchmark and comparison testing.

  • Thank you Ammit!

I’m looking for somewhere in the middle right now, my eventual hope is to get my later generations placing higher and higher on the boards but right now I’m mostly trying to figure out how to start getting anything E8 on the board. I have a few studs on the futurity board already but I’m also curious if you have any tips for breeding an era line from scratch evenly?

Overall I think I want quality more than board placing and GMTs, it would just be nice to have those things intersect if possible.

Are the current colts non competitive because they’re too young? I know timing can be really important with LBs I’m just now totally sure on the reasoning behind that (so I can know for next gen).

    Thank you!! :)
  • Yes, they are a month behind the colts at the head of the LB pack. There might be a strategy in intentionally being 1 month behind though. I have not tested though as long as it was only a single month and never more than that.

  • Hey BRR!

I've not got any advice per se but I do have observations from my own Era specific leader board experiences.

I restarted the game in April / May last year and did kind of ok for a late starter on that leaderboard after a couple of breeding seasons, getting my boys onto some of the sub-10 placings. Now I've got a couple of my best G2 and G3 boys on there but at sub 20.

I did better in the first two on the of the E7 leaderboard, as I was really lucky with a couple of the stallions I bred and with the Futurity first kicking off in that Era. But I dropped off the LB really quickly once members with the highest level upgrade, as they were able to pull eggs and AI breed the next gen a month before I could. I still haven't been able to claw my way back onto it although I've got a couple of decent producing G2 studs that are producing progeny that are about as good as my E6 boys.

I don't think I'm going to do too well next couple of months in E8 because my crop of G2 stallions were garbage, but I'm keeping them entire because I've had some surprise offspring out of low PT'd and inconsistent stallions in E6&7.

When it comes to culling my G2's for all Eras I tend to keep them entire if they paper B, even if their PT score is a bit rubbish. I'll test them on a couple of mares at the beginning of breeding season and if they do well for me I'll keep going. I tend to keep a couple of intact lads for each of my stallions and will only geld if they can't produce me anything AGA. Some of the boys who are good breeders I do try and sell if I have a male sibling who's genes I prefer. So my method is really subjective and not based on testing as I can't afford to comparison my whole herd, as I have so many that I actively breed from at G2.

This is a bit of a ramble but I hope it helps!

  • You should not be using PT scores when selecting keeping breeding stock. It tells you nothing about the breeding ability of the foals. Best to ignore it completely

  • If you can afford it, I would comparison test all of these B papered studs against an exceptionally perfect foundation. I think you will get a mix of worse than, as good as, and possibly a few superiors. Definitely geld anything worse than the exceptional perfect. If you get any superiors keep only those and geld the as good as as well. If you don't get any superiors keep the as good as instead.

If you have more than one after that, then I usually go off of color.
If the stallion(s) I end up with are inconsistent I will GMT them to be consistent.

Basically this is how I whittle down my foal crop to determine what stays intact and what goes:
    Breeding advice for everyone.
Babies who are not bootstrapped get strict breeding advice.
    Paper Testing
    Comparison Testing
    Color preference*
    Consistency*

On these last two if a stallion/mare has passed all of the other testing I will usually spend a GMT or two to make a color change or consistency change to make them exactly how I want.

The benchmarks are different depending on what project I'm working on. Some eras/projects I am more strict than others.

  • Thank you guys!! This is really helpful!!

Ammit, why is PT not helpful for breeding? If I understand correctly a consistent horse will be a better shower and a higher PT means better showing too but does PT only give insight on showing? Do you use a combo of BA/SBA/Comparison testing instead to gauge breeding ability?

I appreciate all your input, you guys are so awesome!
  • PT is only indicative of training ability, not breeding. Paper level and comparison testing is how to distinguish which horses are better breeders.
I agree with Ramshorn. That is how I pare down my foals, too.

  • "a consistent horse will be a better shower" This is not correct. There is no evidence that consistent horses show better. Members just like bigger numbers.

OTTB1 answered the other questions. :)

  • I forgot to add:
My horse that won all of its shows and had the most points this month is an inconsistent horse.
