The Tarnish gene is now available to purchase

Older tarnished horse on light chestnut base

Tarnish is a gene that slowly increases pigment production as a horse ages, creating a tarnished appearance. This does not work like sooty or DP and is not connected to them. As you can see in the example image the tarnishing happens independently from normal darkening and can create dramatic results.

Tarnish is currently available until the end of January.

    Some quick facts:
-Tarnish is a "hypothetical" gene meaning it is grounded in reality so it is not a fantasy gene but there is no reason to think it exists in real life.
-Tarnish is inspired by gray hyperpigmentation, and I imagine it would work in a similar, but much slower, way to gray. It just never goes so far as to kill the chromatophores like gray does.
-Tarnish requires a license to own.
-Tarnish is not available in the lab and there are no plans for it to be in the lab for at least a real-life year.
-Tarnish is recessive and requires two copies to show.

Tarnish shows best when starting on a lighter base. I strongly advise you not to spend money to add it to your already very dark lines. There has to be somewhere for it to go with darkening for it to have much impact.

Note on the examples listed blow, I increased the darlening speed by 20% after making these, so just imagine it says Age 2/Age 8/Age 16/Age 24 instead of 2/10/20/30

    ---------------------------------

Note the limited impact on this liver chestnut. This horse is too dark to show much with tarnish. It would show nothing at all on a black horse.

Tarnish will overpower chinchilla seen here.

I would not pair it with gray/gray reduction. This is the same G/g gr/gr horse shown with and without the gray. It shows much better without gray hyperpigmentation.

Tarnish works well with Dun Factor promoter genes.

  • Very cool! Thank you!
  • This is neat! I really like the chinchilla examples. I know you don't recommend it on dark but what about dark with dilution?
ie sty/sty dp/dp with dun or cream?
  • I'm very excited to try adding this to my Beignet line but my stallion isn't ready to age out so I'll be looking for it in the RGS in a few months.
  • LadyhawkeStables you need a light base to start. As long as your starter horse is on the paler side you should be ok.

  • Well. Did I NEED another stud? No… but did I need this gene? Absolutely. And my other colts are all fairly dark.
    Say hello to Money lol

  • Shoot, the three of you are making me feel left out! These three studs are beautiful!

I think the two platinums with DFP will look especially neat as they tarnish over time.

  • Thank you!
It was my favorite look (PLT and Tarnish) from the examples. Unsure how I feel about waiting to see the color I HOPE to see. :)) It'll take forever.
  • Have to share my boy again. I have always loved the coats that looked like burnished hammered metal, and what I based my Invictus HH off of. So of course that would be the first stud I make with Tarnish. :D

  • @TripleGFarm great name for yours :D
  • Well shoot :-O I guess I need to get someone to buy me the license, because they are PERFECT!
  • I’m 99% certain I want to put DFP2 on Money before I open him for stud. This is the one gene that could convince me to incorporate more non sooty mares. I definitely would love to trade straws with everyone!
  • DFP2 works really well with it because it gets darker and darker with age.
