Should we limit the number of places you can have per LB category?
-
On the discord server, we have been having a long-running conversation about how to make the leaderboards more engaging and more equitable with an aim for a major update for June of 2025.
One idea that came up as part of that conversation was a limit on how many placings per category a single user can take. To be clear I am not talking about how many placings you can get in the whole of the Black club for example. I mean how many times you can place in Black Best Stallion, Black Highest PT etc. Each individual award category would be it's own limit. They are not combined.
I am considering limiting it so each account can appear between 3 and 5 times per top 25 list. I want to be clear that this will have zero impact on how GMTs are distributed. The point of this change is so that more players have a chance to even earn a ribbon.
In some categories, there is only a single player with a top ability breeding program and they can easily sweep the entire 25 spots of a category. (particularly the PT board) While that is awesome that their program is so strong, this is really discouraging to other players who may feel like there is no point in even trying to enter the club. I feel like the game can reward these players while still making room for others.
-I am aware that we have a number of clubs that the foundation board probably won't run if I add this limit, I will probably have an exception for foundation horses and we may have to tweak some club rules on the smaller clubs.
This change is coming as I think it really helps build-up players just entering the late game, and I think makes for a healthier community. Here is what I want feedback on.
1) When should we implement this change? Now, for the new era or in June.
2) How tight should the limit be? How many placings per category should we allow?
Please keep your feedback focused on those two questions. If you have other ideas for LB improvements, that conversation is happening on our discord for now. It will be moved to the forum, once I am ready for that.

I don't understand. Why change something that won't change anything?
It took a year for me to start getting horses on LBs. And it took two to breed up to top spots. Seems fair that I had to be patient and work towards it.
Since I'm not in/on discord this is the day before notice, so I'd vote for June.
And I'd vote for five.
You could create more lbs? Also if this is because people want ribbons, maybe give ribbons to the top 15, or 20? Maybe limit LBs to two clubs per horse, can't take up all the top spot with only two clubs.
I know you aren't asking for the "extra" feed back but I'm not on discord.Thanked by 1leefe3 -
It sounds like you might be confused on a few points so I wanted to clarify things. Not changing the GMT payout does not mean it won't change anything. Changing the number of slots allowed is a big change in and of its self. That's why I am asking for input here.
The psychological impact of seeing your name on the board, even just getting a ribbon is big. Just see the forum posts of people excited for their first ribbon for proof. While it will of course, still take patience and lots of work to get on the boards, it does mean we are guaranteed to have a spread of players in every category. That kind of excitment is healthy for the community.
I also want to be clear this is not the day before notice. We have 4 weeks until the next lb awards.
As for other ideas please hold them for the moment. There will be a thread to discuss wider lb changes once I am ready to hold that conversation.Need to contact me? Read this first.

I like it, but I also understand it since I have been watching that discord convo.
I vote for 5 spots also. -
I am for the next era, I don't make the lb often but when I do it makes me want to work more to get to the lb list, and I am player that dose not max my horses with gmt mostly be cause I don't get many lol, but it would be nice to see other players make the lb.Blue Grass id#: 182429

I agree with this, but I think its also important that you mention the other change leaderboard change that got implemented that "Boosted over cap foals will no longer count towards the best producer list."
I also think this is a good change, but could cause a lot of wasted money spent if you are one of the few that boost over cap and clone foals to compete for that top spot and missed the quick mention in the change log. -
I’m on discord, I love this, I vote for 5. (wouldn't mind 3)
Also, why would it have to be either December or June? Why not January or something? Does it have to be with the new era?DarkPhoenix #15470 (she/her) ~ Premium Upgrade

Thanks so much for bringing that up Ladyhawke. That change impacts an exceptionally small number of players and there is a lot going on right now that impacts most to all players in the game so that one got lost in the shuffle. I appreciate you pointing it out here. It's the perfect spot for it.Need to contact me? Read this first.

DP my preference would be do to it with the new Era though it is not critical, just slightly preferable. I don't think this is a major enough change to warent waiting until June but I am willing to hear people out if they want to just have all changes all at once in one single bandaid rip in June.Need to contact me? I think it should wait until the next era. It would be nice to have a longer head's up than just this next breeding season.
-
I think you should wait until the next era so you aren't being rushed to get it out and have the time to get it as perfect as possible. If you have it completed before the next era put it in but at least its not being rushed.
As for placing I think 2 maybe 3 spots per person. This way everyone potentially has the chance to get some GMT's. Ribbons & seeing my name on the leaderboard is great & all and does show that I am make some kind of progress but I would love the chance to add more GMT's to my stash. I would love to buy some rare genes with real money but at the moment I am out of a job so I am unable to spend real money on games so I am using GMT's to get the rare genes when I am able to get them that way. I am always looking for different ways to get more GMT's so I have a stockpile on hand for the sales when they come around. -
The programing is already completely done so rushing to get it done isn't a factor I am concerned with. It's a minor change with minimal work needed.
This change would not impact gmt payouts.Need to contact me? Read this first.

I’ve recently started being placed on the leaderboard within I’d say the last 6 or 7 months as before that I didn’t have a clue / didn’t properly participate in the game so I apologise if my answer isn’t correct or all over the place. This last season was my absolute best and I made over 85GMTs from my whole breeding season and did fantastic with a lot of my foals, stallions and mares.
I’ll be completely honest and say I think I was probably a player this time who swept up a lot of the ribbons specifically in the Black PT of the year, I won all the rosettes bar 6th and 8th but that is down to the fact I’ve managed to source straws and eggs and I finally bred some great mares and boosted them / bred them to some great stallions and I am privileged enough to be able to max out my foals if they need it and have now started my own little TH line - which wouldn’t have been possible without people putting their straws and eggs for sale.
I like the fact that my foals get ribbons but I do aim for top spots to get the GM tokens so I can continue to improve my stock. I’m happy to only be on a leaderboard 5 times personally as I know how hard it can be to start up a breeding farm and the work it takes to match your mares / stallions. And if the GMTs aren’t being affected (say if a player won 1st/2nd and 3rd) I’m okay with being on there 5 times rather than 25 as it kind of loses the competitive edge as if players know well my horses are the best of the best I don’t need to compete with anyone type thing which I think defeats the objective of the game really - we should all want to be competitive with each other and breed the best horses if we’re aiming for the leaderboard.
HOWEVER, that being said, I think it could damage people’s sales - as I do sell a lot of my foals / mares after the awards and if they don’t have the rosettes it could damage their sales prices - which I’m sure some people will agree with me here they’d pay more for an awarded foal than not.
But at the same time, this will then make these better foals (even if they haven’t got a rosette) more affordable to new players and therefore make the leaderboards easier to access and also make it more fun in the long run as there is more competition. (Which is one of the reasons I sell my stock and a lot of the time they are unbred so people can boost ect if they want to)
I think it’s a good idea really, the only downside being that less of certain breeders foals/mares will get a rosette if they are lower than 5 other horses in the same category - but the upside being someone else who potentially doesn’t get the thrill of having a rosette will get a rosette which I think is nice.
I think it’s very fair that it’s per category and I think it will make the game more competitive and more accessible for the players who may not have been able to compete against the top breeders in the specific category they are aiming for.
I’m not sure what the "Boosted over cap foals will no longer count towards the best producer list." means that LHS mentioned if someone could just explain that to me :) -
Basically you could artificially inflate your stud/mares rank on the best producer board. So a younger stallion that should have replaced yours, all things being equal can't get that top spot with out many millions being spent on boosting the foals.
The change ensures that the lb works in an intuitive way, with the actual best producing horse taking first. It keeps ultra rich accounts from boxing out up everyone else from the top spot. Most players don't even realize you could do this and I think even those who boost foals don't realize that the boosting applied to the score. Now the boost on the foal does not count.Need to contact me? Read this first.

@Ammit it may not affect the amount of GMT's a person gets based on the placing they get but say you limit the amount of spots a person is allowed to "occupy" on any given leaderboard to 2 spots and they happen to have the top 2 spots on that leaderboard then there is at least another spot for another person to receive a GMT (IE person A is placed 1st & 2nd so they would receive 5 of the GMTs in the pot and are at the max spots they are allowed on that leaderboard. Person B is in 3rd place, so they receive the remaining GMT that is in that pot for that leaderboard, and they still have the opportunity to pick up another placing somewhere else on the board.) You did ask for suggestions on how many spots a person should be able to have on a leaderboard which I gave and the reasons behind it. Hopefully the example I gave here clarifies it a little but more.
-
I'm generally only after one LB and it's for my boosted line, so in short, I get the end of the stick.
(Edit- Didn't you already say you wouldnt exile boosted horses? That was the point of still being able to max and boost older eras.
I seem to remember players suggesting to exile them and you said no. Others recommended their own clubs and you said it wasn't necessary.
So, now, it's necessary to exile them completely?)
Every time I start playing the game this way or that it gets changed so I no longer can be "successful" playing it that way. I know it isn't personal or targeted at me. Just frustrating. Im not pointing fingers or blaming.
Itd be nice if you did a mass update once a year, pull the band-aid off, instead of every three months (just a phrase, I'm not keeping track of updates). It'd definitely make game-play planning easier.
-
@Ammit - I think I get it, I have a grey stallion that came 2nd in the rankings but his score was actually better than the champion but I boost my foals and the other stallions foals probably aren’t. I wondered why my boy wasn’t first but that makes sense thanks
-
Because of players like LookingGood, with a very focused breeding program targeting one board I would hedge on the larger side of allowing 5 spots per category.
I don’t love the idea of implementing it now right away. Some more heads up for those that will be surprised by this change I think is more kind.Ramshorn Ranch

I would prefer it to be 5 if this is implemented for the reasons I’ve stated earlier & I would like to have a bit longer to sort my breeding program out. I personally don’t see the point in having a large breeding farm if they’re not all going to get rosettes & be on the board, seems to me that it would be better to have a smaller and more concentrated herd that I know are going to produce the best quality as opposed to those that sometimes produce well and sometimes don’t. I’d definitely have to get rid of a fair amount.
I try for Frame, Tobiano, Grey, Black, Belton and Appaloosa mostly, anything else is just an added bonus but I’d like to be able to get my things in order before the whole thing is added into the game.
Reading LG’s concerns also makes me think about that side of it too as if you’ve only got 1 or 2 categories to focus on it would be disheartening, whereas I do focus on multiple categories so it’s a little less of a kick in the teeth for me if my horses did only show up say 5 times as I’d have them over multiple categories and wouldn’t notice as much. -
I’m not on discord, and I think I understand, I would vote for 5 spaces total.
My only concern is for lbs with very few participates ie the current Collectible, soon to be Miniatures. I had to in the past get almost the majority of the spots filled in order to get the min 25 to get the awards. I didn’t this past round because i didn’t think it was worth the effort and cost. Hopefully the new miniature will encourage others to join in this particular leaderboard and I can just focus on top spots rather than the whole board. :D
It’s exciting when you get on the leaderboard for the first time. Would it be a lot of work to do a shout out of all the first time leaderboard placers? Or a special rosette? These are probably questions for the general lb discussion when that comes.Thanked by 1WensumValleyPonies -
LookingGood - Boosted horses are not exiled and can still appear on every board. Boosting your stallions and mares still improves their lb placing. Nothing has been exiled. I hear that you are frustrated but I think you are jumping to unfounded conclusions here. Maybe if you explained what you think that edit means I can help figure out where the misunderstanding lays.
ETA: I went ahead and looked over your barn. I can tell you are not one of the players this would have any impact on, as you do not use boosting in the way this edit impacts. In fact, it should help your account. Yours is exactly the kind of account this edit was put in place to protect.
TallyHo - When we did testing, we found that what ribbons were lost in someone's main category were made up for in incidental ribbons they gained from the change so we did not find it it reduced a players average total number of ribbons won. It had no significant impact on players already on the boards while still allowing a lot of new names to appear.Need to contact me? Read this first.

Since some players have some concerns about the boosted foal edit I will share some data.
There are 18 *** stallions in the game with boosted foals. Those are the only stallions in the game this has any direct impact on. (It's a small benefit for everyone else.) Here are a few examples of the impact this change will have
BM7SMB 2877028 DorianRebel - was 1,1,2,5 this year after the change is sitting at 1,1,3,5
G10 Chin Lasting - was 1,1,2 this year, after the change would still be 2,1,1
LH9S Doub Chub SUP - was 1,1,1 4 this year, after the change would be 1,1,1, 2
This is a very small tweak impacting exceedingly few horses and even then only in a very small way. You are not going to see big lb shake-ups over this and I would bet only maybe 1 or 2 players would have even noticed the change. It really is not a big change.
All this change does is allow all horses to be compared by the actual ability of the foals they can produce.
ETA: Most importantly this change makes sure non era 0 horses have the same opportunities in color and size clubs as the era zero horses, which until this change could make it impossible for other eras to compete there.Need to contact me? Read this first.

I like the limit idea, I felt so bad one "year" when I dominated the whole foal pt board with 24 foals there was only one other player on there, so I sold back to game almost all them foals (that's a me problem I know :) but I knew it was amazing I achieved it but I felt bad no one else would be able to place.) So I definitely support the 5 spot rule.
I didn't have the funds to boost ect till I figured out more on placing, I've had the top spots in one of the appy boards for a while now ribbons and GMTs through hard work breeding and bringing in outside stock for better foals crops. I've just now felt comfortable with maxing and boosting my stock, so I can't personally weigh in on the rest of the conversation but definitely feel there should be a limit so one or a hand full doesn't over take a board or sections of the boardsRideOutPro on forest/ RideOutStar mesa

Like Kisanth, I would like to know what will happen with the leaderboards that already struggle to fill up enough to cover the 25 spots?
I know this won't affect many of them but it will be really disheartening to have specialised in something, gotten good at it and then get no reward.**Wensum Valley Ponies**

This is from the original post so it is something I am already keeping in mind.-I am aware that we have a number of clubs that the foundation board probably won't run if I add this limit, I will probably have an exception for foundation horses and we may have to tweak some club rules on the smaller clubs.
There are two reasons why clubs might not run. 1) Not enough foundations are available for that club because of era or license reasons. I have a long-term plan for those which will solve that issue for all clubs in June. In the mean time I can an exception in for the foundation list if it is needed. 2) There are enough horses for the club to run but members have not bothered to enter that club. That one is a very easy fix as soon as the call goes out that the club needs entries. At worst the club rules can be adjusted a bit to help them run.
Aside from the foundation lists I don't think there is much reason to be worried about clubs not running. Any clubs that are short should be pretty easy to get to run. I am willing help get clubs to run if we need the extra help.Need to contact me? Read this first.

When the change is implemented, I have no opinion.
I do think a limit of 5 would be best. My ribbons come mostly from showing with the occasional best PT, so it would be a little frustrating to know that my show horses are capped at how many could place. However, I also understand the need for a healthier leaderboard. If the limit applied to best producing and PT only, so it only affects the breeding portion, I would probably be happier. But I’m ultimately fine with what’s best for the community. -
Thank you so much to everyone who provided feedback on this. We have had a few days and the flow of comments has really calmed down.
Bluegrass was strongly in favor of adding this in right now and at a limit of 3 per account. Forest was mostly neutral and more concerned with how associated accounts would be handled. Mesa leaned toward waiting and having 5 per account.
Combining the feedback of all servers I have landed on the following:
-This will be implemented right now. A lot of players are very intent about this, much more so than the people who suggested waiting. I personally think it sets us up for more informed conversations about the June update as well.
-I will add to the club rules a request for players to limit themselves to 2 accounts per club. It is easy enough if you have more than 2 accounts to just focus/keep entries on the different accounts to different clubs. I have done this with my test accounts in the past and it works well.
-We will be starting with a limit of 5 placings per account per category. This is to help small servers like mesa run, prevent altering the payout on the limited-era clubs, and give more transition time to help smaller clubs/servers adjust.
I am going to roll out the limit of 5 placings per club. I expect pretty rapidly to be making tweaks to help small clubs run, so don't panic if you see clubs with not enough horses. We have over three weeks to massage things and make sure as many can run as possible.
It may help some people to think of it like this: You can have an unlimited number of horses entered in a breed register, but you can only nominate a limited number of horses you own for horse of the year. The game is doing the same thing, picking your best horses and submitting them for lb contention. Everything is just handled automatically.Need to contact me? Read this first.

Just another thought Ammit, which I should have posted earlier but had been mulling it over..
It would be really great for newer accounts to see a permanent record of where there horses placed 11th to 25th in the leaderboards on their records page.
When I first started I tried to record these placings in my notes, but now I've got more horses it's impossible to keep up with. Although I am getting rosettes on the boards now, I would have really loved (and still would) to see the lower placings on record. I think this would be especially welcome for the larger or more hotly contended boards where its much more difficult to hit the top 10.
I was lucky to pick and specialise in a breed type that had lower club membership, and therefore get into the higher placings relatively quickly for my play style. This isn't the case for newbies who specialise in, lets say Warmbloods though.**Wensum Valley Ponies**
