Community Project - Let's create a guide to the gift exchange
-
I would love to build some information into the wiki about everything we can think of for the GE. We have a bit more than 2 weeks before the gift exchange opens for registrations so now seems like the perfect timing.
Can you help me come up with ideas about what we should cover? I want to make this as all-encompassing as possible.
Here are some topics I and the discord group came up with:
Etiquette: Follow the wishlists, ask if you don't understand, don't sell your gifts during the exchange. Don't give people their own lines etc.
Expectations: What is it like at each level, what it takes to move up in levels, what you are expected to spend, what it takes to qualify for participation.
Wishlists: How to make a good wishlist, how to read a wishlist. What not to ask for.
How to get help.
____
What suggestions do you have either for topics or more in-depth? I would also love to get a bunch of sample wish lists at different levels to have in the guide.Need to contact me? Read this first.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

Explain how using an elf works if you don't have the restricted gene licenses to acquire horses for your giftee.

I personally don't mind getting horses from my own lines, I've received some really neat gifts in the past where my gifter has boosted or made chimeras out of my lines or even just combined some of my straws/eggs with other players. Definitely a bit nuisanced though and I agree with the rest!
Here's my wishlist from last year for Level 3:
Yay! So excited for gift exchange season and I really appreciate you being my gifter!
All horses in my breeding herd must be:
- ee or Ee, hom sooty and at least het DP
- Consistent & even generations
- Light or medium bone preferred but all heights are loved here!
- Any era, but would love to expand my higher generation lined horses above era 0!
- Foundation mares must be red papered
- Lined mares must be superior to dam, preferably from red or blue papered foundation mares.
Horses in my breeding herd must never: Be yellow papered, inconsistent or have uneven generations.
My absolute favorite HH's are: Follow the Butterflies, Light in the Dark, Red Ribbons, Olive Branch & Nightingale
My favorite genes are: DFP1/2, mushroom, satin, s+, p+, w3 and snowflake
I am always open to straws/eggs/embryos that match my breeding goals - I love bringing in new blood!
Candy ponies are some of my favorite gifts every season and I can never have too many pastures!
I am very strict with my breeding goals and can no longer buy barns with hbs so space is limited! I really don't need any more show ponies and I would absolutely love just a few carefully selected gifts rather than many gifts that don't match my goals.
Hope you and your loved ones are well! Happy June!
-
Adding on to wishlists, maybe an example or two of bad wishlists and bad gifts to ask for. Not sure about other suggestions; the ones already listed are great!
Here's my level 2 from last GE with some changes:
Hello! Thanks for being my gifter. Have as much fun as you want with this! I prefer fewer gifts that closely match my wishlist. :) I don’t mind how big the gifts are!
Horses for breeding must always be:
-no fantasy restrictions
-pass SBA (or at least BA)
Horses are preferred to be:
-horse sized
-younger
-MARES!
I don't mind consistency, uneven breeding, inbreeding, etc.
Upcoming HH's I like: Invictus, Unconditional, Law of Conservation of Energy
My favorite genes are: S+, DP, DFP2, mu, nd1, KP
-I LOVE dapples!
Genes I don’t like are: grey, excessive white covering the horse
Straws/eggs/embryos, sea ponies, hbs, or pointed/show ponies are always appreciated!
Projects and Goals:
-Could use straws from ***star stallions, always looking for ***gold eggs
-Eras 1, 2, 4: would love some outside blood from horses, straws, eggs, embryos. Looking for higher papered horses (** preferred)
I hope you and your loved ones are well! Wishing you a fantastic year ahead!DarkPhoenix #15470 (she/her) ~ Premium Upgrade
Barns always open! -
This is an old wishlist I keep to help me get started with a new wishlist. There are pros and cons to it (level 3)
I love the GE! Really have fun with this!
I think it's awesome to get a gift everyday and I also think the suspense adds to the reveal of a big gift. I'm not set on my exact wishes being followed 100%. Thinking outside the box may surprise me, in a good way.
I'm saving up for IVs for another show barn, after all who doesn't need more stalls lol. Any help towards this goal is massively appreciated!
I'd prefer breeding horses to be wb or draft, 17+ hands (is an added bonus), I dont care for gray due to the horses losing their color. I own 24 gene licenses and I love platinum.
I am lacking mares with ice 19, ice 20, onyx, mushroom and splash m (prefer hom vs het).
All my breeds are my projects. My main two are; 1) My Kaninchen breed, and 2) my Paradiso breed.
It is a HUGE goal for me to max out my 13+ pt fillies before breeding age. As well as get a 5% boosts for a sup colt. I am looking for **/***Gold eggs to match with my Paradiso stud.
A gene I do not yet have and would like is Paintbrush Warm. Phantom Web, atmn and the runes licenses would be nice as well. Eventually I would like to have all the phantom licenses.
I have a few different dream horses;
1) ***Gold mare, consistent with a 14 or higher pt. Within breeding age for at leat a couple seasons. Or something very close.
2) Foundation draft stud with E/? A/? Hom for mu, dfp, kp with 2 kit mutations (sabino preferred), and hom gp. It would also be nice to have a similar stud without license genes.
3) Draft or Warmblood with swm/swm, sa/sa, mu/mu, dfp?/dfp?
Herd helpers I like are;
New Coke, Legendary Lights, Dark Chocolate, Pretzel Twist, Orca, Mistletoe, -
And an old level 2 list
Happy Gift Exchange!
Horses I enjoy collecting have very high daily payouts (show horses may be anything). Even bred horses who have passed SBA and fit into my projects. */**Gold mares. I usually breed Drafts and Warmbloods.
For breeding projects I need help with mares. Hom mushroom and hom splash m. They may be on the same horse or separate horses. Need to be foundation or 2nd generation. 3rd generation will work.
For breeding horses I do not care for light colored cream, w20, kit m, or frame. I'm trying to reduce my white factor. I do like black pearls, white chinchillas with dapples, so some light colored horses are ok. Also please no greys. I love browns, blue roans, platinum and watercolor.
Herd helpers I'm looking forward to are Born Superstar (w20 removed), Dancing Queen, I Feel Love, Strike A Pose, Take Courage, This Is Me, Wonderland, and Your True Colors. Possible tweaking depending on what they look like.
Herd helpers I like are Mars, New Coke, Pretzel Twist, Orca
Eggs, straws, and embryos from top producing horses are very welcomed.
A dream horse would be a warmblood or riding horse brown base color with satin, dp, TE1, s+, Bl, and w8. One horse that is hom for these genes and another that is hom satin and het for the others.
I would prefer to receive gifts that match my wishlist or close to it.
If you find a horse you believe is just beyond stunning (genes do not matter) and you think it'd be a cool gift, I'm open to that :) This can include fantasy horses within the gene licenses I have.
If you have questions please ask and I really hope you have fun <3<br /> -
LadyhawkeStables I think we can probably have a line of don't give a person their own lines unless you have asked first. That seems sensible. :)Need to contact me? Read this first.

We've chatted a bit about this in the Discord but condensing thoughts here for anyone who isn't over there:
The anecdotal stuff I see in the forums about the GE (and to be honest even scrolling up in this very thread and looking at the sample wish lists) makes me as a new and impoverished (lol) player assume that it's not for me, it's just for the longtime players with a big bank roll. (Even the difference between the L2 and L3 lists above seem negligible from this perspective.)
Really emphasizing the entry level and showing newer players how they can get involved at a level that's comfortable for them will be helpful -- not sure if this needs to be done separately or involve a dedicated outreach for newer players to show them the way here, rather than rolling it in to general materials about the GE and assuming that people will do their reading after getting intimidated by what else they're seeing conversationally about it.
(To that end, I'd volunteer as tribute to help with such materials/outreach plan!) -
@StarBarKRanch - this is a really great perspective from a new player! Both Level 2 and Level 3 are for experienced players so those sample lists may be more overwhelming than helpful to a new player. The differences are subtle like genes that cost real money vs genes bought in the lab, but that doesn't mean much to a new player.
Level 1 is super friendly for new players and I think including some more Level 1 lists would be a great way to show that. Level 1 lists should much simpler and include things you can usually get for free (i.e. Ammit usually shares a free rank special herd helper every day in December along with increased candy ponies like you've already seen in October)
Something I might submit for Level 1:
I would love some new foundation horses to start a brand new line!
Things I love to see in my foundation horses:
- Rank special
- Red papered
- Mares preferred
- Any age and breed are welcome, but if I had to choose I would choose a yearling sport pony
- Have DP and sooty at a minimum
- Bonus for chimeras or fun genes like p+, w3, kit m.
- Bonus for high pointed rank specials
Ammit usually releases a list of special herd helpers for every day in December. I'm not sure if these will be on there, but some of my favorites are: Follow the Butterflies, Light in the Dark, Red Ribbons, Olive Branch & Nightingale
Candy ponies are also some of my favorite gifts every season!
Does that list seem more reasonable to you? Any jargon or things that don't make sense that would be helpful to clarify/suggest to players creating Level 1 lists? -
As a new(ish) player, i must admit that those higher level lists did intimidate me a little. Thank you, Ladyhawke for the Level one example! I feel much better now! I can't wait to participate in the GE!
-
Here's something someone might submit for Level 1:
Hello, and thanks for being my gifter! Have fun!
I like:
-horse size
-warmbloods
-darker colors
-S+, DP, TO, snow, and nd1 (I don't like grey)
-at least perfect foundations
-mares
-candy ponies, hbs, show ponies!
-upcoming herd helpers: [insert]
I’d like some era 8 foundations to start a project! I could also use some horses to help me start bootstrapping.
I hope you and your loved ones are well! Happy holidays and I hope you have a wonderful year!

Level 1 entry
Hi and thank you for being my gifter (considering my wishlist if on RAoG).
I am in love with black horses. Silver, pearl, smoky blacks are coat color I'm looking for to start a line. Prefer foundation horses.
It might be a little fancy to have appaloosa or white markings of some kind.
A couple herd helpers I really like are Black Sea and Orca.
I'm in need of show horses any age, prefer over 45 hbs daily but any are very appreciated!
I want to stay away from grey, licensed, and fantasy genes.
Thank you. -
I recommend including a dream horse. If you aren't sure about genetics include a couple links to horses you've seen.
RAoG is visible to everyone and bigger barns/longer term players like to give special gifts sometimes.
When I first started playing I had no idea what to ask for or how to tell what genes expressed in which ways. It's ok to participate and not know.
There is a gift chat available during the exchange to talk with gifter/giftee to ask questions.Thanked by 1Misara -
Thanks for pointing out how intimidating GE can be! One of my first times participating, I got a list that had a very disappointed complaint, from an established player who wanted to be at the 3rd level. I knew they didn't expect me to see their complaint (they thought it was going to those running the GE), but it was VERY intimidating, and their wishlist was quite extravagant. I reached out to some advanced players who were extremely helpful, and I did a good job getting them what they wanted. My giftee also apologized for sending their advanced list to me lol. So, long story short, even if it seems really intimidating, you will find generous players at every turn and get lots of help if you need it!
*Hope this is not too rambling; I'm going on very little sleep right now I-) :))Thanked by 1Misara -
I want to say it does seem intimidating at first, and I hesitated for a few years before joining in. Trying out level one really gives you the learning curve to consider leve 2 in the future.
Even for level 1 lists, be as specific as possible about what you want. As a giver, it’s so much easier and more fun for me to shop knowing what you want rather than hoping. Size, color, if you are breeding with a certain line/outcome in mind. Things you do want, and things you don’t want.Thanked by 1Misara -
Taking a break from this for now. I have started working on the guide. It is set up so people can leave comments on the document.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1tihC2NnWBiTy5Unx39nViUTyVQZHpg-cKRte3NimKI8/edit?usp=sharing
ETA: I went ahead and turned comments off as I found it was making it really hard to work on the document. Once it is in the wiki it will be available to add pictures too, make edits etc.Need to contact me? Read this first.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

I could use some help coming up with a list of these that are appropriate to ask for by level.
What's OK to ask for at Level 1 versus 2? Obviously, anything goes at 3 but the line between 1 and 2 is less clear.

This isn't really a clear line, but I think level 1 should be less game savvy requests, especially regarding lined horses i.e. even generations, superior, etc. Like I mentioned in my sample list I try to pick things that people can get mostly for free if they are active (rank specials, candy ponies)
I also don't think licensed gene requests have a place in level 1, but I know people like to surprise gift them. Maybe one "dream gene", but a request looking specifically for watercolor drafts with a high PT is tough for a new player. Even though you could find those without spending real life money, it requires some heavy searching and using an elf.Thanked by 1Ammit -

I got the first pass done. Haystack and I are working on figuring out how we want to host this thing. If you see things that need clarification or additional things that need added let me know.

Thank you Ammit for putting that together! It is very helpful!
I do have a question about the GE though: can i gift horses with licensed genes even if the recipient doesn’t have the licenses? Or can you only gift horses with licenses that they have? I think I know the answer to this but I just thought I’d make sure.
