Heads up on large number of image generator changes coming in the next 6 months.
-
I have started the process of rebuilding our image generator to work with all four legs instead of two legs. I have to go through the code gene by gene for this update which means it's also the perfect time to work on a huge number of updates that have been long overdue. These changes are currently limited to how genes are visually expressed in the game.
I am going to be making a very large number of changes and I want everyone to be emotionally prepared for that.
Notably, markings are probably going to change because if I edit a gene it changes how the seed renders.
This is what my current list is looking like:
-Wild bay getting updated for more realism
-Cream needs an overhaul, the hues are just not right
-Satin will be redone to look more realistic (more shiny less iridescent)
-A huge number of genes need to be made fully dynamic including dun, several white spotting genes, etc. The expression on these might change quite a bit.
That's the major edits I have planned so far. The actual number of genes I need to work on is basic "all of them"
I do not know yet if edits will come out all at once or in pieces. There are pros and cons of both systems, and for technical reasons, it might all have to come out at one time later in the year. I will do my best to update this post wit examples of progress so the changes won't be a total surprise.
I have already finished updates to bay/brown. I am now working on a significant overhaul of wild bay. I think it is going to piss off some wild bay breeders but right now it 1) really does not look realistic and 2) is one of the least popular genes in the game so the changes are 100% coming.
I will do my best to answer questions but I may not be able to answer all of them.

Will we be able to get peacock appaloosa after it's all done?

Considering the hundreds of hours of work ahead of me, it is very unlikely.Need to contact me? Read this first.

Excited to see changes! I kinda like when new image gens are possible, even on older horses. It's like getting the create a foal surprise all over again to see what it's going to look like.Ramshorn Ranch

Very exciting! I just started getting into Wild Bay after noticing not much was happening with it on the leaderboards. Change is necessary for growth - looking forward to them!

I didn't think we would, but felt it worth asking about. I'm definitely ready to see what the end result is, even if it takes a while. Make sure to take time for yourself, too, though.Thanked by 1Ammit

Thank you Ammit I can't to see the new looks,. Will the skin parts of the horse be showing realistic coloring in the skin areas of the horse. I do love it when the mottled eyes, muzzles and sheath/udder areas show up on the Appaloosa colored horses. Again thank you for all you and your team dose for HAJ.Blue Grass id#: 182429

You will need to provide more context to your question. The game already does that, so I am not sure what you are suggestion should be changed.Need to contact me? Read this first.

Thank you, I should have asked will you be making the skin areas a bit darker more noticeable? Sometimes to me the coloring is very light on some horses. I am talking about horses that genetically have black skin under their coat, so the skin part wouid be black in color if that makes sense.Blue Grass id#: 182429

I understand. You are asking if this horse can have a black muzzle and, if it had pangre plus, a black belly/flank fewer hairs area, since the horse has black skin.

That horse is a pearl cream. They do not have black skin and the skin shown here is correct and accurate to real life.

Huh. My apologies. I thought Smokey black had a black skin with a cream coat.

Just an update I found that fixing wild bay is going to require completely rebuilding how agouti works all the way from the palest bays to the darkest browns. The actual moving parts are going to stay the same but how the game decides what "level" of bay to assign a horse is going to change. I will try to minimize appearance changes in regular bays and browns but there may be some shifting that happens to them. I'll post examples when I can.Need to contact me? Read this first.

A reminder that I am still working on these in the background. We are going to have a very large single update to get things working for the 4 legs update, then we will roll out updates to make genes fully dynamic one by one.
Expect to start seeing update posts about these soon.Need to contact me? Read this first.

We have done our first pass a satin update. I am not prepared at this time to post tons of examples for you but we would love to know if you think we are on the right track. (Ignore the missing leg markings please)

Ooo I like it! Satin was never one of my favs because of the reddish/warm cast that seemed to show on some of the darker coats, and my personal preference is cool tones. I like that it’s neutral now.
-
I do love that the color tone stays the same in the new version! I'd never thought I say this but maybe too shiny? Is that a thing? The shine lines seem much hasher than the original, maybe a side effect of removing the warm cast? Just slightly giving off vibes of a shiny plastic toy not a shiny hair coat.
-
I really like the new satin on the cream.Ramshorn Ranch

I like the new satin but I agree. Maybe just a little less shine? Looking at pictures of real satin horses though, they sure are shiny.
Would you maybe be able to add an example of wild bay with hom mushroom? -
So based on feedback from all 3 servers and Discord we made a few tweaks today. The same feel just cleaned up the shine some. Not posting on lots of bases yet, just giving an idea for how it looks on different BCs.
I want to make a point of sharing how it looks on a national horse. Our national BCs are pretty flat so the shine on them reads a bit off. The nationals along with several of our original BCs are still in the works to get an update on the highlighting and shading. I am sharing this so you know what the plan is. I don't know if the satin update or the shading update for the nationals will be out firstNeed to contact me? Read this first.

Today Jenx was able to finish the Friesian BC glow-up. The Friesian was out very first attempt at a BC and we were still learning what worked well for it. Now that we have more experience it is time to improve on those early efforts. The before is the current Friesian art in the game and the after is the update we are looking to implement.
Love the high gloss look? Here is the new proposed art with the new satin.Need to contact me? Read this first.

We have things a bit more nailed down now. So I can give a general update. In the next week or so we will roll out a very large update that will allow horses to generate all 4 of their legs independently from one another. The generator now really only creates two legs. After the update each leg will have have it's own generation and sampling.
Major things this update will include in addition to those 4 legs:
-Wild bay complete and total overhaul
-Switch over to new satin art
-Tweaks to cream generation.
-Nexus and Axium will no longer cancel each other out.
-The lowest level expression of roan will have more white hairs than before.
-Some pinto horses had overly blue eyes, this will be made more realistic.
It will also include the hundreds of small changes needed to make all the different four-leg generation work. Most of those you won't really see changes on. For example, Dun is still exactly the same; it just has a bit more leg going on.
Once this changeover occurs every horse will old generation will have broken far side leg markings on even simple things like bay. So we will be adding logic in the game that says if your horse is flagged to refresh its image and that image is older then the launch date of the 4 leg update, do a full regeneration of the image instead. This will mean the shape of your markings will change. There is no real way around that so if you have any horses with extra special markings be sure and safe those images asap.
After this update goes out I fully expect there to be a fair number of special cases that need adjustment. I will do my best to test things thoroughly but there is no way I can catch every possible combination. After this large update expect a bunch of smaller ones to come out in short succession.Need to contact me? Read this first.

Did some work on the darkest shades of buckskin today. You can see the before and after here. I think in the future we will want to do another round to make these more dynamic, but I think this is a much nicer and more accurate expression.Need to contact me? Read this first.

This was yesterday's post
Somehow it got missed on this server
This has very much been an "If you give a mouse a cookie" update
In order to fix agouti promoter, I had to rework how bay/brown calculated and because I had to rework bay/brown I had to redo how sooty expressed, and because I had to redo how sooty expressed... You get the picture.
It's been a struggle to keep the changes has similar to the old art as possible while still fixing the issues that need fixing. Here are some progress photosNeed to contact me? Read this first.

I rebalanced Palomino this morning. The tone is more representative of real-life palominos now and I added in a bit of leg lightening.
