Introducing The Dutch Warmblood and State of the Game Updates - Game Feedback wanted
  • image
I waited on a true warmblood BC until I felt like I could really do it justice. I am so glad we did because I feel like this one is a true knockout. It's got to be my new favorite BC.

The DW is now available for you to unlock and is included for those with a BC subscription.

    image

Something of note is that the foal's hind legs are quite spread apart. That means for now the far side hind leg is going to have some errors. We know about that and it will get fixed but we have to do a bunch of reprogramming the image generator to work for 4 legs instead of 2. It's the same for all BCs. It's already on our list.

    Personal Updates

I wanted to give you all some updates on how the move is going. Yesterday we spent hours with our lawyer at notaries and the immigration office. It was worth it though because as of yesterday I am officially a legal EU resident and have started my process towards permanent residency. Haystack also applied for his residency today and will have his in a few weeks.

Immigrating to the EU with a child is very complicated. Yesterday we applied for the family reunification process for our daughter. Once that is approved Haystack has to fly with her back to the United States. They will have to stay there for an unspecified number of weeks (Most of August probably) until she has a visa and is allowed to fly back to the EU. Only then can she apply for her residency.

Yes, it's a really stupid and expensive process. It's also very disruptive. We appreciate your patience while we are doing all this flying back and forth dealing with immigration offices. It's very hard to run a company while dealing with this. It's a lot and it's overwhelming.

All that said, we are loving it here. It's an easy and gentle way of life. The food quality is so nice, it's incredibly safe, everyone is less stressed and has time to enjoy life. We just got to get through the last bit of this moving process.

    State of the Game

2 more breed characteristics coming this year
We have already put out 5 new BCs this year (Irish Draught, Thoroughbred, Dutch Warmblood, PonPon and Seapony.) We are planning to put 2 more in 2024. A fantasy one for Halloween and a real breed for December. We have not locked down what those will be yet.

Instead of doing an eighth BC this year we are going to go back to some of those early attempts and look at fixing up the shading and some of the details. We have learned a lot about how to make the horses look good and think we can do can improve upon our early efforts now.

We will make sure and put the old versions and the new versions to a vote by the members who use that BC before we switch things over. If you’ve invested in these BC’s we want you to have a voice. The Saddlebred and Friesian are first on our glow-up list.

We also plan to use this extra time to work on converting our 333-pixel high backgrounds to 500 and phasing out the old shorter backgrounds.

    Image Generator Queue Status
I would love to be able to give you a holistic explanation of what is going on with the image generator queue. I can’t because understanding why we had issues requires so much technical knowledge that any explanation I can give would be meaningless to you. What I can tell you is that we had a problem where the generator queue was getting stuck in a loop and other issues where our server farm was using old information. This happened while Haystack was traveling internationally. As soon as he could dedicate a large amount of work hours, he got things stabilized. He is actively working on changing how our generator handles the queue to make our system more robust and improve our operating costs.

Back in January we turned off automatic image generation in the the background (that means pasture foals, aging up, etc) for everyone except premium accounts. Meaning if you did not have a premium you have to open the page of your horse to see an updated image. We did this as a cost-cutting measure to slow the game's hemorrhaging of money. You can read about it in the thread “Unfortunate news about image generation - big change for non-premium accounts”

At this time we still do not have an ETA to get it running for non-premium accounts yet. This month is going to be a MASSIVE server bill because of all the times our generator got clogged up. I am hopeful that the new queue system will get our costs to a more reasonable amount and we restore this functionality for those with basic upgrades soon. We will keep you posted when we have more news.

The image generation system is a massive hydra with tons of heads we have to keep talking to one another (and all the heads are orange cats). The queue is just one of these. It takes deep focus and tons of hours to make improvements to it. Clear focus and long stretches of free work hours are not something we have had in spades while dealing with an incredibly expensive and stressful move in the middle of an economic downturn. We are on the downslope at this point though. The worst is past us and we are all looking forward to getting this beast tamed.

    Skin Generation Status
Did you know that our image generator creates skins for your horses just like a video game? This is another head on the hydra that needs work. The skin system was built to only handle the near side legs. The new BCs have far-side legs showing as well. We did some bandaid fixes to prevent the worst of the visual errors from that but the system needs some serious work to get everything showing correctly. We really want to get this work done but the move and server stability issues have been screaming for our attention. I just wanted to make it clear that we know there are issues there and we can’t wait to fix them for you.

Same with the overdue improvements to the Advanced Tack editor like mane swapping, moving brands etc. Those changes are on our list. We are so excited to get to them. We just have to muck out the barn of all the gross unfun background poop first.

  • Check in on Changes - Feedback wanted
When I make changes to the meta of the game, I try and make a point to keep an eye on things and make sure it is working well. Here are the changes we have made in the past year that I want some feedback on.

    -3yr old egg donors
In February I allowed 3-year-old mares to have eggs pulled. I said at that time I was going to start with just eggs and we could add 3-year-old embryo creation to that if everything went well. From what I can see it is super smooth and has been going fantastic. How do people feel about adding direct embryo collection at 3 as well?

    -Primary Era
One change I have been keeping an eye on is moving the primary era forward. I am very happy with how this going. Once I finish moving the primary era come December it will perfectly line up so that era becomes the primary era just as that era is starting to hit the breeding ability cap and the race for that era is finishing. With the adjusted timeline you will never be able boost into a primary era and dominate it without having participated in the race to cap for that era.

I know a lot of you don’t know what that means, don’t worry about it. Just know it has to do with the deep strategy related to the brand new eras that start every 6 months. This is such a high-level and complicated strategy that impacts so few people that I am not asking the general population what they think of it. Please don’t ask for lb strats on this thread, make a new post. If you are one of the small handful of members who have been aggressively competing in these new eras though I am happy for any feedback on moving the primary era. (Not other lb changes, please. See below)

    -New Era LB rebalancing
In April we started a system of trying to make competition in the newest eras more egalitarian. The original plan was to switch the price to IVs, then we settled on limiting some eras. I don’t think we have quite nailed our goals here just yet. Please don’t post feedback about that change here. I am going to make a dedicated post about it so we can have a community discussion. It needs more than we can fit in this thread.

    -Breeding Lab Changes
This breeding lab update has been the slowest of slogs. Sorry about that. Not only am I dealing with the move and all that entails but I have to run vast other swaths of the business as well. Please know lots more improvements are coming on this one. It’s on my to list for tomorrow even! That said, if you have feedback you want to share I am all ears.

    ---------------

Thank you for your patience with us on this stuff, and for making it through this monster post. I try to give a good rundown of what’s going on a few times a year. This is your opportunity to let us know what is or is not working for you so we can adjust our plans accordingly (Again lb era limits will get its own thread soon.)

We appreciate you so much! Thanks for taking care of our family.

  • Thank you so much for all the hardwork you guys do! Glad the move is going well and you guys like it over there (:
  • I love these posts! I find the behind the scenes stuff fascinating and one more reason I love the game, and why I don’t have sticker shock (or at least I lessen my guilt :D ) when I look at my game spending on my bank statements. :D Supporting Artists who make important work is necessary I think.
But seriously, thank you for all you do and I hope the next few weeks go smoothly especially with all things involving your daughter.

  • Thanks for everything and this is also my new favorite BC! Super excited to see that the Friesian is getting a glow up, the art is beautiful and I was obsessed when it first came out, but compared to the new BCs, the shading doesn't look nearly as realistic as the others!

Side note on BCs - with all these awesome new BCs, I'm having a hard time choosing my defaults. I know we can set height rules on seperate breeds, but I would love to set different heights for my default breed. For example I would love to do the new Dutch Warmblood for warmbloods and the PRE for Sport Ponies, the Traditional Cob for Drafts and Pon Pon for Cobs.

I honestly forgot the age for eggs got lowered, so thanks for the reminder!

Breeding lab changes are what I've been most excited about, but honestly very happy with the changes already made - pulling straws/eggs from horse page, plus the public straws update is fabulous. Keeping name selection on embryos and moving the implant box higher up on the page makes this much smoother as well.

Embryos are still the most clunky for me. In an ideal world I would love to be able to select eggs and straws from a search page. I always forget which horses I want to match up and it's the sole reason my horses names are becoming just a string of abbreviations. I'm not really sure what you mean by "direct embryo collection", but I think it's maybe related to this issue and would probably be a great addition!

Glad to hear your move is going well and there's a light at the end of this tunnel of craziness! So happy for you and your family and your new adventure! :x
  • In that section of the post I was talking about creating embryos from 3 year old mares directly instead of pulling eggs first and then turning those into embryos.

I agree embryos need a fair amount of work done on them. :)

  • I think the three year old egg pulling is the largest advantage the premium accounts have and it ensures the premium accounts will always be at the top of the era LB.

I personally love it but I think it’s unbalancing. I also don’t think it’s very realistic but whatever purple horses. :)
  • As far as appearance, I wish that the big floof tack pack had a difference between all socks and no socks.

All socks should be four white feet. No socks should be four colored feet. Right now both of them make bright brown feet.

This annoys me way more than it should. I understand the logic that people didn’t know how to change floof hoof hair but…

  • Egg pulling on younger mares is 100% realistic and is done very often. We even have members on the game who have done it on even younger mares than 3. :) Fillies tend to start cycling by 18 months.

  • As Khisanth said, I love these posts! Glad your move has been smooth and I hope it continues to be. :x Love all these updates and fixes!

I think that embryo collection at 3 will help even out the advantage that premium accounts have.

For the breeding lab, the move of the embryo implant box has made it so much easier to implant embryos. Would love it if you could do it for using straws as well. Not sure if this has been mentioned, but I’d love to sell straws/delete straws in bulk as well as set expirations in bulk (and maybe set expirations when you collect the straws?) I've also noticed that when implanting embryos, it usually stays on the previously chosen stud, but it often jumps back to the start for one random stud, for no reason. (not sure if that made sense lol)

  • Those changes are already on the list for straws. :)

It does not stay on the stud it stays on the stallion/mare combo. If it jumps it's because you ran out of duplicates of that embryo. That does not mean it should not work differently but just wanted you to know it was not for no reason.

  • ohh, that makes sense. I thought that it had been staying on the stud. Soo, if its from the stallion/mare, I'd love if it were just the stud. Just from me, others might not agree :)

  • I will keep this short and sweet, (crazy life right now), and will just pitch in my two cents as requested.

    -3yr old egg donors/embryos.
Yes! Add it. The more folks who can enjoy this benefit the merrier I think. I don't see why embryo collection should be limited and egg collection not.

    -Primary Era
I have no complaints with how the primary era has been shifting. I think the idea that an era is the primary era right as it is hitting cap level quality makes sense and rewards those who have been investing in the era since foundation level. Which in my mind is the perfect intention.

    -Breeding lab changes
Would love to see some sort of summary like a herd download type option where we could download a freezer list of eggs/straws and some basic stats like paper level, era, color, generation.

  • Agreed, RKO. The change log is one of my favorite newer things. They do so much I never knew about!

  • I’d love a Welsh BC, this one isn’t as likely I understand that as there are the 4 sections, A-D and you’ll already have your BC mostly sorted I bet! I’m holding onto the hope of that though.

3yo egg donor/embryo would be amazing! Very beneficial I have some rising 3 year olds that I could use!
  • This is not my horse, this is a beautiful foal of LaurierArabians but wow, do I love the DFP on the Dutch warm blood foal!

  • Question-is the “national” medium a quarter horse or is that a possible BC in the works?
  • We pick BCs not based on breed but on the style of horse we think needs to be added to the game next and the quality of the references we can find. We made a huge mistake in the past allowing the community to pick what we added because it resulted in worse BCs that were terrible to work on and didn't look as good in the end.

  • I love the new Dutch Warmblood BC. I'm saving my pennies to buy it. I am very interested in seeing the Saddlebred glow up. It is always interesting to see what is being worked on, and what we can expect to see in the game. Thanks for keeping us up to date.
