sought after genes
  • What genes are people currently looking for on the market? what genes do you look for and why?
I'm breeding snowflake varnish appaloosas with no interest in them currently.
  • The really cool thing about this being a smaller server, is that the projects I see people doing have a lot of variety. There’s not often a ton of people breeding for the same exact traits over multiple lines.

The main breeding trends I’ve noticed are Eras, PT/Bootstrapping, Fantasy, and Open Shiny/non-fantasy.

For Eras, I’ve noticed many players opt for simpler genes, sometimes even staying within 1 solid color the whole time. Others are more elaborate.

PT and Bootstrapping, is just about anything goes as long as it’ll produce a good show pony.

Fantasy breeders I don’t have much experience lately, but the current trend appears to be mixing multiple together and seeing what happens. The big help lately being more fantasy club options.

Open Shiny/non-fantasy I have a fair bit of experience here, haha. I find a higher rate of interest in my stock when there are multiple genes stacked together. For example, my Wicked line would still be perfectly successful in my book if GP was the only “shiny” gene I was breeding for. However, since I also have Satin, DP, and sometimes Sabino 2 or KP, the line is attractive to a broader spectrum of players. In addition this line is pretty well established, so it would still produce excellent horses if I decided to cross it over with my bootstrap lines.

Granted, I’ve had plenty of nice stallions not attract any attention until they were closer to aging out, or even not at all; it just depends on if the right player sees them at the right time. And it may take a few generations before the line generates interest. My Dorian line is also a good example there. I had a smattering of interest in the earlier generations, but because it started with a pair of double boosted clones, nobody really had anything to match up with it. It’s generation 5 and 6 of that line that are now really starting to take off. It’s also a matter of pinpointing which of a group of stallions would be the best to push for advertising.

Of your stock, this Stallion would be an excellent one to promote.

By the looks of it he is a little uneven bred, but he could make a good bootstrap stallion. He is **Star, with a nice PT score. He also has a variety of genes that would cross well with other lines, in addition to the snowflake you are breeding for.

You may have luck advertising your one of Solemn and Still boys for the Era 5 futurity- the best method I’ve found so far is offering trades with other Eras breeders.

I hope this is helpful! :)
  • This is kind of a hard question, because so many players are looking for different things. Here's my two cents. You might get a different opinion from other players:

Personally I like Duns, especially if they have DFP1/DFP2. But I also like Roan, Sabino 2, white 3, S+, gp, KP.... The list gets quite long eventually. It's almost easier to give you a list of what I don't like.

However, I'm more picky than just color, and many other players are as well. For example, I strongly prefer medium bone and horse height (warmbloods). However, there are oodles of players out there who only do light boned, or heavy boned.

Then there's the folks who are only looking for a certain quality level or certain pedigree. For example right now I'm not really looking for anything less than Blue/A papered, except in Era 6. Lots of players only want evenly bred, or no inbreeding or something like that.

Long story short, there could be a lot of factors that will make a horse marketable vs. not to another player. Not just the color.

In general, I don't think the market for selling foals is particularly strong unless the foal has something REALLY special about them. Here's the thing though, those special ones are ones that I want to keep. So that means all of the foals that I sell probably have some sort of flaw/reason why I don't want them. If I don't want them, why would I expect another player to want them and pay handsomely for them?

Marketing stallions is tough because most players already have their own stallions that, for the most part, are "perfect" for what they want. Also, I find that many players are willing to almost give away their straws or live covers, even for their most fancy ***star stallions. I would consider the market to be flooded. Whatever it is you are looking for, you can find multiple options for super cheap. So there has to be some sort of standout reason to choose one stallions vs. another and that is going to be highly individual to the player.

At the end of the day, my advice would be to keep breeding the snowflake varnish appaloosas if that is what you enjoy the most. It might be only a small number of players who are also interested in that, but I think it's a similarly small number of players who would be interested in DFP1 Duns if you switched to that instead. I personally find more joy in liking what I am breeding vs. having lots of other players who want to buy my stuff. I consider it a happy bonus if there happens to be a player or two who likes what I have.

  • I almost forgot to add this. I have also found it helps to advertise and highlight only a few stallions rather than the whole stud barn. I think that folks don't really want to take the time to sort through your barn to find the diamond in the rough. If you just give them your one or two best options, you might find that will generate more attention for those few that you choose to highlight.

  • I've noticed the most looked for in here is
    DP, Sa, Kp, DFP2, Mu.
    Second Is
    W3, M, KP2,
    Then
    Ice fantasy mixes,
Onyx isn't as popular now that we have DFP1&2 to play with,
Snowflake is a small group on this server.
I've been stalking @Bluemesa s wicked line and her aria/Dorian lines because they are 1)even, 2) the colors I breed for, 3) I know she is harsher on her quality of horses she chooses to continue her lines and is selecting the best matches possible for the best outcome of her crop. So if I use a straw/egg even if it fails BA or SBA I have a high pt foal that may become a good show horse for my income, higher the pt older the show cap out level is.
Plus it's a better chance if I do oppsy and combine he wrong 2 horses I get a nice stud/mare for my bootstrapping show producers
Same with ladyhawk I outsource my MU and ATMN lines though her stock for those same reasons
There is 2 more I outsource though but for the most part you seen the top players with the most interest because of those same reasons but most of the interest you are seeing has alot to do with the buyers breeding interest and style, if you are wanting to stand a stud and have interest in his do what I did before I had my special boy made, the futurity boards and search bars .... if a stud has multiple people listed under its straws/embryos made section you know THOSE players are looking for those types of Genes.
Look at those horses lines, paper level, Era ect .
    It's just like real life,
My color, bloodline, and show experience (pts)
Come into factor when getting interest from the public

  • I'm working on making my lines more even, but right now there aren't many snowflakes that have the genetics I'm wanting. I have saved back a few studs I like for different reasons.
  • image
    snsn dun it like camo

his line aren't even because I had to use what was available to get him and it wasn't much
  • image
    snsn chris log

he was held back for me because of his dpf1 gene, he's the only one with it that I have
  • image
    snsn cookies n cream

he's just what I was aiming for with the snowflake gene he's homozygous black with prl, but I had to use what was available to get him which was limited.
  • image
    snsn blue dust

he's homozygous black and has roan which is something else I wanted lol
Im working with a limited number of horses on the market
  • image
    snsn living in color

this colt is basically percent for me, he's a genetic jackpot, though I'm hoping to get more like him but with even more.
  • I always enjoy feedback
  • You can do what I do when I need to puzzle it together, match the breeding pair (ones listed above) with one similar and then those foals should be somewhat even...then the next generation if matched up will be the ones you BA SBA for public breeding just add a note in your note section under the horse about having to build the line, as long as the parents and grands are close enough paper wise people that outsource will be more likely to use them

  • It sounds like you are having a hard time finding the type of thing you like in the stud barns of other players. So that's probably a good clue that what you are breeding for is not something that lots of other people are also breeding for.

That being said. Maybe you could have two projects in your barn. One that is your snowflake appies that you love, and you might have to breed from the ground up to get stellar horses that are exactly what you want. The second project could be something that is more popular with the rest of the group if you are really wanting to have interest in your stock from other players.

  • most of what I like isnt what other players like vice versa
  • I hoping it becomes big like it used to im not sure what happened
  • That doesn't necessarily mean that what you like is "bad" or that you should give it up. Some more things to consider as I have been pondering on this:

Even if you do decide to switch gears and breed for what everyone else likes, you now have more competition. If there's 200 DFP1 stallions available, but only 20 snowflake stallions available. Your snowflake stallions are more likely to standout in the group of 20, even if it's only a small amount of players who are interested.

Another thought I just had is that there's nothing stopping you from "stacking" some of these more desirable genes into your snowflake lines. If mushroom satin and DFP1/DFP2 seem to be popular, you can add those genes into your lines but still get the snowflakes you are looking for. It will be a little tougher since your outcrosses likely won't have snowflake, but it is possible with some patience and time.

One thing that might give you some hope, is I actually noticed quite a few folks had special project stallions in Era 6 that were homozygous snowflake appaloosas. So it might be that snowflake is going to start gaining in popularity very soon as these Era 6 stallions start to leave their mark on the population. It will be a few months before you start seeing high paper levels from these lines, but they will get there eventually. I noticed several of these players already have a 2nd gen snow/snow stud from these lines that they likely will be using in the future as well.

  • I agree, with the influx of Era 6 producers carrying snowflake it should rise back up in popularity soon!
  • I wish I could afford to get certain genes on some horses, but that's just something I can't afford right now.
I will keep working on my snowflake lines
  • anywho, any help would be awesome and even pointers. I'm still learning everything and getting better .
  • It's really the quality of the horse and the pedigree not the color that makes a horse desirable.

  • You are not doing anything wrong! Focus on what you like, increase the quality, and the genes you have will likely come back in popularity, there are always cycles.
Personally I don’t breed for Appaloosa in particular, and I focus mostly on sport ponies, so I’m not generally looking for appy studs.

Depending on what genes you are trying to bring in you can ask other players for straws or live covers at the generation you need. Many have been keeping the costs down; my straws are for pull price and covers are reduced to encourage outcrossing for futurities. (ID 220 if you want to look)
  • It is absolutely a time thing as well. Starting a line can feel tedious at first, but stick with what you like! Show off what your stock is capable of producing in the foal and 2yo appreciation threads. The power of suggestion can be pretty effective, give it a couple generations and I’m sure they’ll start being noticed and worked into other lines. :D
  • I can confirm the show off your foal/ 2yr Olds post has definitely helped myself and others I have 2 up on the form you're always welcome to post to
