Question on changes of gene expression
-
I ended up scraping my breeding program and restarting with era 9, mainly because of how much the expression of certain genes changed.
I’ve looked through my old horses to show some examples of what they looked like prior to their images updating.
It is such a stark difference and I don’t really understand why. Some of my gorgeous dark, rich coated horses are now pure white.
Or the expression of snow has changed so much that instead of subtle specks of white, it now takes over everything.
I guess I am just trying to figure out what exactly changed and what genes are responsible so I can avoid this happening with my new project.

Snowflake has not changed at all. That is normal snowflake progression and it has always worked that way. Appaloosa horses varnish as they age.Need to contact me? Read this first.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

Are you sure that they didn’t just grey out? If they have the grey gene then they will eventually be solid white.
-
The ones they posted don't have gray.
WillowRidgeFarm is it possible you are confusing the sabino update with snowflake.Need to contact me? Read this first.

I think it’s the sabino 1 and 2 combo on those horses that made them go white. I have had to make adjustments in my sabino lines to avoid the full white as well.
-
I think one of your main culprits is the W15 which used to be Sabino 2. Several of the white genes were adjusted to better match real life genetics and increase the expression of white when you have homozygous KIT genes involved. So if you're looking to stay away from all white horses having heterzygous horses, or sticking to genes with low white expression are the route you need to go.
Low white options:
Roan
Tobiano
White 29 (formerly White 3)
White 8
Maybe Kit M and Powder White as well, I don't have enough of these in my lines to know for sure on those two.Ramshorn Ranch

Thank you guys! That would make sense if sabino was updated as I had that in a lot of my previous projects. Hence why I would notice a difference between how this project was aging.
I also naively had no idea appaloosa horses varnished like that!
