Might be a silly question regarding breeding, but...
-
How do you choose horses to breed and get foals that are actually better than their parents that pass BA?
As a new player I've been working with mostly foundation/create a horse horses, and focusing on the Rank Specials I've been able to get.
Of course I'm not typically working with gold/star papered horses, but trying to breed up my own lines to these ratings is the sort of challenge I enjoy. But nearly every foal I've gotten has not been worth keeping/has not passed BA.
Can someone give me a quick and dirty rundown? What am I missing?
Thank you so much! -
Not a silly question, just something that's hard to learn without someone telling you.
There are different levels of foundations. There are exceptional, perfect, and "normal" creates.
Exceptional creates are foundations that have an extra boost in breeding and/or showing ability. But, exceptionals are down one era from the current era because of that extra boost.
Perfect creates are non-exceptional rank specials, top notch show or breeding herd helpers, and perfect foundations, all have 100% breeding and/or showing ability.
Normal creates are not guaranteed any showing or breeding ability, and can be anywhere from horrible to perfect in either.
To find good breeders from the current era without having to gamble on normal creates, look at the foundation rescue. The rescue is foundations that were auctioned by other players, and the game picks up the ones with perfect breeding ability. They're only 2500 hbs and most have the majority of their testing completed already.
Breeding bonuses:
Live breeding is the cheapest, but doesn't carry any bonus, so you will have a high rate of foals that won't pass BA.
Any AI breeding-straws or embryos- has a 15 day bonus, so the foals are more likely to pass BA.
Mares held in the pasture for over a month have a 30+ day bonus, which is even better, and is as cheap as live breeding.
The 45+ day bonus was introduced a couple months ago (forgot exactly when). It's when you implant an embryo into a 30+ day pasture mare to use as a surrogate. The pasture mare doesn't contribute any genetic info, unless it's her embryo. I have never had a foal from a 45 day bonus not pass strict breeding advice.
That being said, keep as many spayed and gelded horses as your barns allow, they grow up to make you a lot of hbs down the line, which funds your fun projects!
Hope that helps! -
Sunnyshine i just put some Rhapsody Yearlings up in the auction. Let me know if you are interested and I will pull them and private sell them.
I had to add other peoples horses into my mix and use other peoples stallions to help my mares as well. You would do this in real life as well, right. I also am ruthless about breeding advice and don’t breed anything that doesn’t pass. I test everything I can and breed accordingly.
Tight breeding and inbreeding don’t have negative consequences here like in the real world…
I don’t generally auction them off, but keep them in a show barn to help pay for my breeding attempts.
That and all the things that OTT1 said.
Good luck. Everyone here is pretty helpful. -
Also, the rescue also sells double star and double gold horses that players auction. It's a good way to get some high pt show horses for cheap. I have also found a couple good stallions that way if you want to bootstrap with your own stallion.

Your main issue might just be that you are breeding a low number of breeding pairs.
Each time you breed a set of parents there is a certain range of ability of foal they can produce. Breeding advice looks at the average or middle of that range, then looks at your foals and says is your foal average or better than average? If so, it passes breeding advice.
Anytime you do a breeding you have a chance of getting a foal anywhere within that range. So some will be on the low end, most will be in the middle, and some will be on the good end.
You can repeat the same breeding 20+ times and get a mix of foals that pass and fail breeding advice.
The “bonus” stuff that OTTB1 mentioned is that by using a certain type of breeding method you can increase your odds of getting a foal on the good end of the range vs the bad end of the range.
Live cover is the worst method, no bonus
1-30 pasture day mares live cover is better. More days = more bonus.
AI straws and embryos implanted into mares without a pasture bonus have a bonus equivalent to a 15 day pasure mare.
Embryos implanted into pasture mares stack the bonus. You get the 15 day AI bonus + a bonus for the pasture mares days. For a max possible 45 day bonus. People call these “45 day bonus embryos.”

Thank you so much everyone! I will reduce live covers and start pulling straws and such. And I'll continue to breed pairs and see what I can get.
