how did you choose your project?
  • Hi all :)

I am a new player and already having fun messing with herd helpers and such and seeing what colors I like to see.

How did you decide on your projects when you first started? How have they evolved as you've played longer?

I am still getting to understand what makes a quality horse, so tips on what shows good breeding vs good showing is definitely helpful. Thank you!
  • If I was starting fresh, and knowing what I know now, I would try to comb the sales boards for a small batch of the best papered mares I could find. There might be a few blues or better kicking around. (Vs. starting with the C or Red papered foundations).

I would then look for stallions that I could breed to that were relatively cheap and **star or ***star.

I would geld all of the stallions. Keep any mares that paper better than their mother, spay the rest. Then repeat next season breeding the best little batch of mares I could find to a **star or ***Star.

It won't be terribly exciting project wise at first, but it will help get your feet wet experimenting and seeing what you like, and will help build you a strong young show herd that in a few months will be earning their keep.

Once you've got a good daily bonus to play with, then it becomes easier to be picky and start focusing on a project. For me, the project kind of came along naturally once I got to the point that I was breeding so many foals I had to be more picky about what I kept intact vs. gelded/spayed. Looking at quality first, and then being picky about color after that if I still had lots of extra.

I have found over time I tend to like certain colors more than others and might start to pick foals to keep intact differently than I have in past seasons. I've also got a LOT more strict about what stays intact vs. not.

  • I suppose using Create a Horse so much isn't helping with that :))

Guess it's time to start going through the sales boards. If it isn't too much trouble, would you be willing to take a look at what I have to see there are any worth keeping? I've gotten a few Exceptional Show horses from DHH from the forums.
  • The creates are not all bad. As a new player you can get some really nice pointed horses from creating that give you a bump to your daily income bonus.

This stallion I would geld as he's probably not a perfect foundation and you have other stallions that are better. Keep him in your barn because he has high points.

This stallion I would also geld for the same reason. Keep him until you have a horse that has earned more points that could replace him.

This stallion either needs to be papered or comparison tested to his sire to see how good he is and if he is worth keeping around.

  • All of these foundation mares I would spay unless you can verify they are perfect foundations.

It looks like this mare would be a perfect foundation because you bought her from the foundation rescue, so she would be ok to keep as a mare https://mesa.horsegeneticsgame.com/horse.php?horseid=3506645

Keep them unless you have another horse with more points to take their place.

  • At this point in your game, any spayed mares or geldings I would keep until you have another horse with more points to replace the horse you are getting rid of. Your goal is to accumulate as many points as possible. When your account is new and young the best way to do that is to create or buy pointed horses. If you run out of space, try to replace with horses with higher points, and SAVE funds to purchase more barns. More barns = more stalls to fill with show horses = more points and more daily income.

As you get to a point you have more stall space and daily income to play around with then you can start breeding more horses in the hopes of producing more horses that will be good point earners down the road.

  • Thank you so much! I have followed your advice. How can you tell if a horse is a perfect foundation? I realy appreciate your help.
  • You are looking for rank special herd helpers, herd helpers that say perfect or exceptionally perfect in the name, or horses that come from the foundation rescue.

Exceptionally perfect are a step above perfect in breeding and showing ability.

It's so easy to find perfect foundations, there's no reason to keep stallions or mares who aren't at least perfect or better.

  • Unfortunately, for new players with a small income and small barn space the game can seem a bit slow at first as you are building. If you stick with it, as you grow and get more room for more horses playing the game can take up as much time as you want.

A fun thing for new players to play around with is tacking up their horses with fun tack and decor. So that might be something you can do in the mean time.
