Hi! My best tip is to pick the stallion that you think will do well (fancy genetics, high PT for the era, etc.) and then promote heavily! I always sell the straws for $1, asking people to only use them for same era foals, and if you can afford it, offer some incentive for breeding to your guy. Maybe a trade, offering to breed to the stallion of whoever breeds to yours, or even a cash prize.

I agree with Ammit, the best way to win GMTs is to focus on breeding show foals that are Futurity qualified. Especially as a newer player. The lions share of GMTs I win in the Futurity come from my qualified foals, not the stallions.

My best advice is to find a ***star stallion that you like and pick the 10 best mares you can scrounge up that are the same era as him or a higher era than him. So for example if the stud is era 4 you want mares who are era 4-9.
Breed those mares all to that same stallion and then make sure to hang onto the foals and train and show them regularly. Depending on the era, between ages 4-5, they have a good chance to help their sire hit the board and earn you something.

I would suggest that the ***star stallion is era 1 or later if possible. Era 0 is going to be dominated by players who have boosted mares to take advantage of.

Yes, it would be totally ok for them to be unevenly bred.

The only qualifications your foal needs to be futurity eligible is that you cannot have ever owned the Stallion, the foals must be the same era as the stallion, and the foals cannot be owned or bred by the stallion owner.

So I can't breed futurity qualified foals from my own stallions. I need to choose a stallion owned by another player, and that I have never owned, and make sure the foals are the same era as the stallion.

I bootstrap all of my futurity horses specifically to bulk up my show barns. I make sure to use my best papered mares possible for the era(s) available to qualify the stallion. The only era it would make sense to breed even papers is era 9 because everybody has the same paper level and breeding ability right now.
