I'm sorry you're dealing with this negativity! My family used to buy and sell auction horses, and I had a sweet little pony who was absolutely terrified of being touched, and had obviously been smacked around... Took a long time for her to relax. My dad, a rough dairy farmer, never saw the need to be nasty to any animals, even though he wasn't one to snuggle or pet them haha.
So to sum up, it's absolutely not necessary and often detrimental, and the negativity can also be hard to be around. Hope she'll come around @};-

There's a FB group "Milestone Equestrian Community - Support for Equestrians" that I think you would like. They focus on evidence-based horse handling and training and R+ training. My horse (14 yo OTTB ex-broodmare) has made leaps and bounds with R+, and is WAY too sensitive to react in a good way to any screaming or whatever.
