A conversation happened the other day on Discord about how stallion owners get the bulk of the gmts on the futurity but foal breeders do the bulk of the work, take on most of the risk and use the most stall space. On every server, but especially on bluegrass, it is difficult to get people to breed foals rather than just stand stallions.

Right now each era awards 56 gmts. 36 go to stallion owners with 1st place getting 10gmts, 2nd 8 gtms, 3rd 6 gmts, 4th 4 gmts, and finally 5th gets 2 gmts.

The best 10 foals from 1st and 2nd place each get 1 GMT, awarding 20 to foal owners in total.

This is the proposed change suggested yesterday on Discord:

1st place stallion 8 GMTs, best 10 foals 1 GMT each.
2nd place stallion 6 GMTs, best 10 foals 1 GMT each.
3rd place stallion 4 GMTs, best 8 foals 1 GMT each.
4th place stallion 1 GMT, best 6 foals 1 GMT each.
5th place stallion 1 GMT, best 4 foals 1 GMT each.

Before 5 stallions and 20 foals shared 56 gmts, with the proposed change 5 stallions and 38 foals would share 58 gmts.

The largest benefit to this change would be to push the value of foal breeding and reward a larger number of foal breeders in hopes of encouraging breeding rather than just standing of stallions. This is particularly needed on bluegrass where the long-standing culture of breeding to only your own stock has limited the number of futurity participants, but I think would benefit all servers.

I would like your feedback. Should we implement this change for the January awards?

I like the suggestion, I am one that puts my studs up for breeding but not many even get to service many mares. I do breed foals too and if they are a stud they are placed on public stud when they can breed. Many times my stable only putting star papered studs up or even an A papered stud, I think this would be a great and very helpful change. Thanks, Ammit

I think this sounds good! It will definitely reward the foal owners more showing them regularly. I feel I do breed futurity babies in most eras, as well as stand my boys. Prior to this month when the gift exchange took priority, I felt we were doing well on this server with the futurity swap game here on the forum. We were keeping the eras filled, so that has to count for something!

I think it should be implemented. While it would only increase my GMTs (which we don’t want) since I breed a ton of futurity, I think this would really encourage more people to participate, and I hope it will. The futurity swap game has been great, and this change could get more people to participate in that too.

I really like this idea.

What also might be cool is for the top foals from each stallion to get an award as well as the GMT. A little mini rosette for each one that can be displayed on their image would be really great.
Even if they were all the same colour, so that you didn't have to rank them based on the points earnt.

Having these awards visible might help with resale value or advertising stallions / mares for breeding once they get older?

Correct they already get ribbons. They are the only horses in the game to get blue ribbons.

I like this change as well. I don't see any reason why the foal breeders shouldn't be more fairly rewarded for doing most of the work.

For those who mentioned the swap game, I am planning a reappearance in January. I just figured we all had enough going on with the gift exchange to skip it this month. The futurity awards all ran still, so good job Mesa Team!

I think I can safely say we all appreciate the effort you put into running the swaps Ram! I’m also proud of us as a server for making all the eras in the midst of the exchange!

Some of the eras were looking sparse for a while, but I figured that people were gifting futurity straws, and I think that is exactly what happened.

Since this is clearly unanimous on all servers, I will work on implementing this for Jan.
