Red Pigment Modifiers
  • What are some genes that boost the saturation of red pigment? I am talking about things like having e/e and dense pheomelanin so they come out super dark by maximizing the red pigments if that makes sense. Looking to see if there is anything else modifying the red without diluting it. I've started playing with agouti promoter but I am not sure what it does tbh. I want to expand upon chestnuts essentially and create more dark and bright red shades but I am not sure if I am using everything I can at this point. Thanks!

For tax this is one of my chestnuts that are so dark they look black which is very cool to me for some reason lol

  • There aren't a lot of genes that brighten or darken the coat. Most of them dilute in some way.
I know that Sooty+ also darkens them. Sooty+ and DP is one of my favorite combos. Normal Sooty darkens the coat a bit, but not as much.
Agouti promoter might affect chestnuts, but it would only affect them if they had agouti to start with, some chestnuts don't.
Pangare lightens certain parts of the coat and adds some dimension without lightening the whole coat.
Silver doesn't show on chestnuts, but flaxen does. Flaxen needs to be homozygous, though.
  • I don’t think agouti or agouti promoter affects red coat colors at all. Agouti turns black horses bay and agouti promoter adjusts the effect of agouti.

Spotty, Sooty+, and DP will all darken the coat. Pretty much anything else will give lighter colors.

The search is a fun tool to look for chestnut or liver chestnut and see what genes the horses that you like tend to have.

  • I think the DP darkens the Red tones and Sooty/Sooty+ affects the black pigment. But somebody correct me if I’m wrong.
  • Sooty does red and black pigment. DP only does red.

  • Thanks everyone! Looks like I am on the right path with hom DP and hom Sooty+ on my dark chestnuts!

    Few more questions:

Do we have a visual for how agouti promoter works? Is it just what makes wild bay vs standard bay markings? It looks like it just reduces the black markings. Is there anything that increases the black points?
  • That's my understanding is that it makes agouti promotor makes agouti more agressive and removes more black. I'm not aware of anything that would reduce agouti and have the opposite affect to give you more black on the points. I think bays are pretty standard to have black to the knees in real life as well, but someone may correct me.
