Silver spots?
-
Hello, I'm starting to breed silvers, and I've seen that some horses have clear spots but others don't, even with the same genotype. Is it because there are hidden genes or is it a normal variation for the phenotype?
For example:
BW Clear Airplane
RAT SilvrBlk 1827700

The spots are called dapples ;) but I’m not sure what causes them. Sorry :) probably not much help to you
-
Thanks, I don't know anything about horses in real life, only have seen them close a few times, so anything that helps me with the vocabulary is great :)
-
It is normal variation in phenotypes. The game is built so that the same genotype can give you some variation in phenotypes to mimic real life.
There are some genes that are more likely to give you dapples in the phenotype. Silver is one. Sooty+ is one.
Even if you don't know horses well, it sounds like you understand a little bit or a lot a bit about genetics. You'll catch on quick!Ramshorn Ranch

Thanks for the information!
I breeded guppies several years ago and tried to learn what I could about their genetics, that's why I know a bit about it. -
I don't know hardly anything about guppies or other fish, but I am guessing they have a lot of color varieties and genes involved in their color as well. So that is not a bad background to have, I think.Ramshorn Ranch

Yes, a lot of genes for color, fin shape, body patterns, etc. You can breed 3 or 4 generations in a year, so they are good to do genetic "experiments", but in the end they were a lot of work and I didn't have the time to do it. This game has reminded me a bit about those "experiments" :)

So fun, we are glad to have you! Ask all the questions. :)Ramshorn Ranch

Guppies are so neat! I used to keep beta fish and the colors were very varied and complex!
-
Yes, they are great, it's incredible the number of colors, patterns, fin shapes, etc, in just one species. I never had bettas but they are great too. Anyway, these horses are great too and don't need so much work to breed :)

I used to breed guppy and endler hybrids for my local fish shop! The colors were wild and I wish I knew more about their color genetics because I ended up turning the snake skin markings into stripes in one of my projects. I just called them tiger. I was trying to get near solid red ones too and I got very close before I had to shut down and move across the country to pursue other things!

That must have been fun!. They are great for breeding, every now and then I'd like to breed them again but I resist because I know I would end with a lot of tanks and a lot of work in no time :)
