So in a normal breeding with no bonus involved you can get a certain range of foal ability. Some of them might be on the upper end of that range and great foals, some might be at the lower end of the range and be poor foals.

When a mare has a pasture bonus it increases the chances that her foals will be on the higher end of that possible ability range. She might still have a poor foal, but it's more likely she will have a good foal.

Pasture bonus accrues daily by spending consecutive days in a pasture. So a mare in the pasture for 10 days will have a 10 day bonus, and a mare in the pasture for 30 days will have a 30 day bonus. The bonus caps out at 30 days. The more daily bonus a mare has, the more likely her foals will be good.

Breeding via artificial means such as straws or embryos has an automatic bonus applied to those breedings whether the mare has been in a pasture or not. That bonus is roughly equivalent to a 15 day pasture bonus.

You can move mares around in and out of a pasture or other barns, but she needs to be back in a pasture before the rollover at the end of the game day or she loses her pasture bonus.
