Breeding Statistics of Year 52
-
I thought that it would be fun to keep track of and look at my statistics for breeding this season. I’ve honestly never really been one to keep track of how much I spent on my breeding project and I figured it would be a good idea so I can plan better.
Costs include egg pulling, cost of straws, breeding fees, performance testing, genetic testing, breeding inspection, comparison testing, etc.
My process for looking through my foals is that first I SBA test everyone, then I performance test and get rid of inconsistents (or comparison test them last), then I go through and comparison test to a maxed horse in the same gen.
I just finished up all my era 5 breeding this morning including AI and pasture breeding. Here are my statistics and how much I spent:
Gen 2 Foals- 266 bred
134 passed SBA (50.4%)
13 passed comparison testing (4.8%) This is a little bit skewed though, as I did not comparison test all of the colts because I do not need anymore G2 studs at the moment. Most likely would have been a higher percentage.
1,356,000 spent
Gen 3 Foals- 90 bred
40 passed SBA (44%)
8 passed comparison testing (8.8%)
692,800 spent
Gen 4 Foals- 78 bred
17 passed SBA (21.8%)
1 passed comparison testing (1.3%)
709,800 spent
Gen 5 Foals- 33 bred
7 passed SBA (21.2%)
1 passed comparison testing (3%)
264,700 spent
Gen 6 Foals- 42 bred
4 passed SBA (9.5%)
1 passed comparison testing (2.4%)
379,300 spent
Total foals bred: 509
Passed SBA: 202 (39.7%)
Passed comparison testing: 24 (4.7%)
Total cost: 3,402,600
I haven’t finished going through the 24 foals that passed comparison testing. If you break down the cost of each of the 24 foals it ends up being around 141,775hb. I am planning an maxing 4-ish foals which adds on another 2,500,000.
I think next season I will not worry about pulling eggs in gens 1-3 but will focus on egg pulling gens 4 and 5. This season I spent a lot trying to bring up my gen 2 numbers. -
Passed SBA: 202 (39.7%)
That is a HUGE percentage! Congrats. :)Need to contact me? Read this first.

Thank you! I noticed a huge difference in SBA from my pasture breeding vs breeding lab. Its crazy how much a 14 day difference makes.

Wow! Seriously impressed at your stats gathering. I love that sort of thing, and so helpful to inform future decisions. Especially if you're trying to save money somewhere.Ramshorn Ranch

this is cool! Good idea.

My era 0 pasture had 69 horses with full 30+ days. Everything is cap, one stallion is boosted. 17 passed sba, making them all cap. (This means I don’t have to individually test. Much cheaper.)
I kept 9 mares and turned my BiP stallion into a mare, for 10 total. Everything else is show herd.
No comp testing. 24% sba pass. 7% keep rate.
Note this cap, which seems easier to get horses to pass, as they just have to AGA cap.

E4 G6 parents, 47 mares full pasture bonus, almost all maxed. After sba, 6 fillies and 4 colts. The colts all test AGA sire but one tests AGA to a known cap. The rest test worse than cap. The fillies have two that test AGA known cap, including the BiP. Per testing I’m keeping three but there is a stunning SM that is getting unaltered and maxed. 3/47 at G7 is great for me. Last year (month) it was 0/45.
40k comparison testing, 23% SBA pass, 8% keep rate with the max, 6% without.
How am I testing? I comparison test to best of parent’s gen (not cap, barely) (mare lag is real and your mares are not the same quality) and then I’m testing against a horse with a *** parent. Specifically

Era 4, Gen 7, foals g8. Advanced breeding lab (15 day pasture bonus.) All parents maxed.
Bought 33 straws for 1hbs.
Created 33 embryos for 66k. Created 33 mares but I get the money back after I auction them. Implanted 33 for 150k.
Oh no. 1/33 passed sba and is also cap. Maxed another mare.
3% sba pass rate, 3% keep rate without maxing, 6% keep rate with.
——
Era 4, 4th Gen parents. 30 day pasture bonus. 33 foals, 20 colts, 13 fillies. Sba pass: 5 colts and 10 fillies. After comp testing, keeping 2 colts (one did not pass comparison testing so will need to be maxed) and 2 fillies.
45% sba pass (!!) and 10% keep rate without maxing 12% keep rate with maxing. 100k comparison testing (some dams got altered.)

Era 4, 3rd Gen parents, 30 day pasture bonus. 69 foals. 31 colts and 38 fillies. Sba: 13 colts and 15 fillies.
At 4th gen, all my era 4 foals must be gold or star. This saves dramatically on comparison testing. 3 star colts, 2 fillies. I always look at everything though— as long as we can max, perfection can hide anywhere. Maxed two fillies.
26 horses sent to the auction, 3 days, starting bid. 2 kept/altered because they had a pt of 11.9 or higher.
In a surprise to me, one of the colts came up sup sire but worse than best of gen. So while just using the paper cut off works to reduce the comparison test count, apparently I still need to test. 28k comparison testing.
40% sba pass (!!!). 6% keep rate without maxing, 9% with maxing.
