I’m contemplating if it would be possible to have a competitive inbred line. It seems not, especially now with the limits on maxed horses. How do the non-inbred breeders go about this? One stallion makes the colts only? How do you split the mares?

It seems like a logistical nightmare.

Spreadsheets.

Maxing is also not required. Just need to pick the best using comparison testing, or use an era that is not limited. Also don't have to do it all in one season or one account. Could also team up with another player or spread it out in time. Plenty of ways to do a project like this. It's very possible with some good organization.

You need to decide how many generations you want to shoot for and then do the math to backtrack how many unique foundations you need to get a totally non inbred foal of that generation.

Yup! I am going for 7 gen (so I can hit cap) so started with 64 foundations. I bought in a lot of outside blood.

Ok I’m intrigued. 64 foundations, how many stallions? One foal a season or flushing?

You would have to do 32 stallions and 32 mares.

Each stallion would have a single mare partner. I think for each pair you would want to flush so that you had better chances of getting a top end foal out of each pair in a single season.

Then you'd have to make sure out of those 32 foals you kept an equal ratio of 16 stallions and 16 mares to match up in pairs for the next generation of breedings.

Etc.

You can do one foal a season if you want to max that many foals, flushing would be more cost-efficient but neither is cheep. Of course, if you can just 1) not be super strict about ability or 2) be willing to give each pair multiple chances to produce a foal of the quality you want. Not every project has to be in super fast or perfected ability mode.

You would have to make sure that the Era is below primary Era if you wanted to max that many foals, now that the new limit is in place.

Also, I believe part of Summer's initial question was can you have a "competitive" non-inbred line. I assume they mean a scenario where you started in Era 7 and then tried to keep up with the top of the producing leaderboard. In that scenario I believe you would need to flush since you would not have the luxury of being able to wait multiple seasons for each pair to produce a keeper foal.

I made the same typo as well. Too hard to say inbred or non-inbred multiple times in a thought and keep it straight. Lol.
