Homemade Horse Treats
-
Who makes their own horse cookies and wants to share their tips/recipe?
I am going to start our herd on a hoof supplement that comes in a pelleted form. The amount of pellets per dose is pretty small. We have 11 horses, so I could fill 11 buckets with a small amount of grain and their supplement dose, then haul them all out to the pasture. BUT 1) that's a large amount of buckets to haul, and 2) it's not guaranteed that everyone will get their fair dose since we have a few bossys who will wolf down their grain then steal from others.
So I am contemplating an idea where I would make horse cookies, each containing 1 dose of supplement pellets, and then I would just need 1 bucket/bag with my 11 horse cookies and I can walk out to the pasture and hand feed everyone their cookie for the day.
I am a little concerned that baking could potentially destroy some of the active ingredients in the supplement pellets, but maybe I am overthinking it. I do have a dehydrator, or could freeze cookies.
All ideas welcome!Ramshorn Ranch

Ooo that's a brilliant idea!

Sometimes I think so, and sometimes I think 11 cookies x 7 days a week means 6.5 dozen cookies per week
Although, we will be selling 4 of the younguns this spring, which would take us down to 7 animals. So that's more like 4 dozen cookies per week.Ramshorn Ranch
