Repeat After Me: Don't Be Like Salty! (New Years Resolutions)
  • Friends, I come to you One Frustrated Mitch. I'm frustrated with my own darn self lol

I finally figured out a breeding project that I'm actually really excited to go forward with and it is all Cream and Pearl based because I'm a sucker for buckskins and other dilutes in every day life. Great, right?

You would think so. I started my game on Mesa in November 2021. I collected ALL THE PRETTIES and have A little over 1500 horses. Tons of foundations that will help me on my way, but other than my Fantasy genes (admittedly a decent portion of my population), absolutely nothing is organized. I am now sitting here, trying to make some semblance of sense of what is basically an ADD-having perfectionist's most beautiful nightmare.

I'm gonna be here a while but hopefully by the new year, I will have imposed order on my chaos herd.

Don't be like me. Be organized. I'm also a massive hypocrite and would probably do things the same way all over again lol

So while I'm kicking myself and getting carpal tunnel, I wonder: anyone have any resolutions or goals for 2024? In game or in your real life?

    I just want order lol

  • I decided I’m going to do era 8 super hard. That’s still next year.
  • I really want to do Era 7 but who knows if I'll have my in game chaos 50% settled so that I can?

If anyone can find a method of organizing that's solid, please, let me know =))
  • The pain is real. Following this thread for better organization ideas!
  • Yeah... Every time I sort, I wind up panic dumping my pasture foals into random wrong barns :(( lol

  • So. Many. Pixel. Ponies. It's a good problem to have though!

  • Spreadsheets are your friend, my friend!

I think I am up to 7 sheets/tabs currently on my spreadsheet. Anything that I decide I want to keep track of I try to find a way to organize it in a spreadsheet. Anytime I am playing the game I have my spreadsheet open as well so that I can keep it up to date as I go.

The other tip I would have is to set some hard rules for your breeding stock you keep. Then don’t budge! If you’re finding you’re having a hard time with keeping too intact many foals make your rules even more strict.

  • For my own goals. My era 3 herd is seriously lagging behind the other eras in terms of progressing upwards. They will be getting some special attention these next few seasons.

I would also love to see how competitive my era 6 herd is without utilizing max ability. I have used that quite heavily in era 5 and just can’t sustain the gmt drain to keep doing it for era 6 as well.

  • Thanks for explaining your approach RamshornSportHorses. I can't do the spreadsheet thing (too many eye surgeries and more to come). With my computer text size maxed, I can see pretty horses and read the PT scores and genetics. So I sort based on those things.

I rarely auction horses. In real life, we've rescued throwaway horses & foals and I just can't do that here, even in a game. I really enjoy going through the auction and 'rescuing' pretty horses and foals. The non-breeders go in a show barn or riding school barn. Most horses in real life aren't show breeders either, and that's okay.

On a different HAJ server, I sold some well-bred horses and the buyers bred them once, then snipped and auctioned them. I won't do that again.

I really hope other people in this thread will talk about their playing strategy. Thanks for reading.

  • RAM: Do you need anything specific for Era 3? I’m strong in that era and could send over some stuff…but I’m non-fantasy drafts, as a warning.

Organization: I paid to solve this challenge. I use pastures to store my mares, one barn for all foals, one barn for all studs, one barn for when I was breeding for w1/w1, and the rest is show. (I had a game changing moment with my first 1000 barn. The income jump was drastic.) I don’t intend to have an era 6 stallion, and mare pasture bonuses don’t apply to outside breeding so I’ll be storing this eras kids in a barn.

As for culling, I sba everything, then test it against parent, and then against its best sibling. I’ll keep sup horses, but will replace those foals with better ones in time. I even breed but I inbreed.

Futurity foals are weirder. Since the goal is to get the most points, I prefer neutered inconsistent horses. All the consistents will cluster in points but the inconsistents will be outliers and I’m seeking high end outliers. I don’t keep foals with pts less than their parents. I also don’t promise to lock unless they send me twice the straws they want me to keep. I do still feel a twinge of guilt when auctioning off someone’s 4.7PT futurity foal.

I don’t lock futurity foals but I don’t delete anything from my show barns until they are 6 and then again at 10. I’ll do a per show barn search and cull and 6 year olds that aren’t cutting it. That’s just for space. At 10, horses earn their lifetime value if you put them in auction. So I search for anything below 400/450 and toss it in the auctions.

(There is a flaw in this plan. The main money makers are horses that cap out show wise at 1/x. So if I’m culling this early, the higher gen horses aren’t capped out, so I don’t know where they’ll land. Yes, it’s a gamble.)

I also turn a lot of stallions into mares. I take my horses from pasture twice a week to show them. I do this far away from nightly rollover because I don’t want to lose the pasture bonus. I search by PT under four in the auction and pick up 13PT+ foals for $2750. I hunt (this is annoying) for futurity foals others have dumped because they are inconsistent.

Learning the search function is the most powerful thing you can do because then when you lose the horse you can find it again. I lose horses All. The. Time. I just searched my show barns and found some amazing mares I had mis-organized.

I also ask the chats dumb questions when I don’t understand something. I get curious and want to know how things work, from horse genetics, to horse breed names, to game design. This community is fab at answering questions.

Oh! Have a good naming system. I can look at the name of my horse and tell you the era, gen, and quality at a glance.

Winters Wild Rose 3SA is an era 3 (winter) horse who is 3 gen (3), superior to parent, and as good as my best era 3 gen 3 horse.

Equatorial Example 4CX is an era 4 (equatorial) 4th gen (4) chimera (C) who has had their ability maxed out (X). All maxed horses will be sup parent, but they are not all equal. 4CXA means as good as the best of era and gen and 4CXW means it’s still amazing but the A is better.
(I suggest finding your own letters. A often means auction to other people.)

That was more than I intended to type! In short, yeah organization is hard.

  • Summer,
Thank you for the offer but I am looking for warmbloods. Theres plenty of options out there and in my own barn between Eras 3-5 to cross in I don’t think I will have a problem bumping them up. I just need to dedicate some actual planning to it.

  • Summer, can you explain why you don't keep foals with lower PT than their parents? I wasn't sure from what you wrote if this is culling criteria you apply to all foals or just futurity foals.
