Pasture bonus for eggs?
  • I know that mares get a pasture bonus, and I saw somewhere (forgot where) that horses bred through embryo transfer have about a 15 day pasture bonus automatically.
If I keep a mare in pasture, and pull her out of the pasture every 5 days to pull an egg, and put her right back in the pasture, will the resulting foal from that embryo have the pasture bonus?
I have not had much luck with getting the best foals from embryo transfer and am just wondering how I can optimize my breeding.
  • You must breed in pasture to receive the pasture bonus. Anything A. I. gets the equivalent to a 15 day pasture bonus.

  • Okay, thank you!
  • When I use embryos I only expect 5-20% SBA pass rate, depending on how many embryos from a pairing. If it's less than that it probably isn't a good pairing.
  • The new breeding advice changes will probably give a higher pass rate now if the pairing is an unequal match.

  • I always breed evenly, but for some reason every foal I have bred through embryo transfer has been spayed or gelded. I'll try a couple next month and see if anything changes with the new BA changes.
  • You may not be nearly as even as you think you are. Lots of people mistake even generation for even ability and they are not the same.

  • If you are finding that your crosses have a very low or 0 pass rate with BA or SBA (old versions) then most likely the parents are not an even match breeding ability wise.

Even generation and even paper level can still lead to mismatches if the stallion happens to be on the high end of the paper level range and your mare is on the low end of the paper level range.

I tend to disregard worrying about generation matching because of this and try to just shoot for matching ability. It's not an exact science since we can't exactly see the numbers built into our ponies.

It could be your sample size also. If you're only breeding 1 or 2 embryos per pair a season, there is a good chance you have just been unlucky and gotten the breeding fairy on a bad mood day. I think some people expect a super high pass rate of 50% plus for a good match, and I think that's just unrealistic. More like 1-3 out of 10 is probably more what should be expected.

  • I love the idea of pasture bonus embryos but the mechanics of that seem complicated.
  • That would be an awesome bonus for pasture embryos!
