Brindles
-
So, I encountered a small problem (or two) when breeding some horses - should brindle markings show up immediately? Or by any chance, will they show up when the horse ages? Because I decided it would be smart to try to breed brindles, so I lost a couple foals due to white markings, but none of them are brindled. #-o

Edit: None of them are even chimeric, for crying out loud!

No, if they are not born chimeric, it will not show up as they age. They either are or they are not. There are some folks on here that breed for it and can offer more/better advice than I can about the odds of breeding chimeric foals, but I am pretty sure they only get a small number from 200+ foals bred, so it's a challenge for sure!

It’s pure chance if a chimera is produced, although it seems some chimeric parents are most likely to pass that through their lines (sometimes popping up with a random 3G chimera etc).
The DFP1gene when homozygous will produce a horse with “brindle” in the color name and faint brindle markings. DFP1/DPF2 together can create a paint drip brindle appearance. These are inheritable brindle in the game; chimeric brindle is a long shot genetic accident of fusing two embryos.
Hope that’s helpful! -

It might help to learn a little more about what chimerism is in real life. It's not an inheritable trait like eye color or coat color. It occurs when two embryos are fertilized separately, but then later fuse together into one embryo. Each starting embryo has its own distinct DNA, so as the fused embryo grows you will have some parts of the body's cells that came from one embryo, and some parts of the body's cells that came from the second embryo. If the DNA was pretty different from each other (for example one embryo had DNA for a chestnut coat color and one embryo had DNA for a black coat color) then you can see this mix in the coat color with both chestnut and black appearing.
Here's some examples of animals who possibly have chimerism.

At the end of the day chimerism is a pretty rare event to occur in real life, so that is mirrored here in the game and chimeric foals are not common to produce. I do think other players have found that chimeric parents are more likely to produce chimeric foals in the game, but it's still very rare and I believe you can get chimeric foals from non-chimeric parents as well.Ramshorn Ranch

You certainly can get them from non-chimeric parents. I once got this guy, and he doesn't have another chimera anywhere in his pedigree.

You can also combine two embryos to make a chimeric horse in the GMT lab.

OMG I totally forgot that chimeric markings can't be inherited #-o
