Lethal white info
-
I just lost a foal to excessive white mutations that I didn't think was a risk, can someone take a look and see what they think? Sire was R/R and Lp/Lp (large) and dam was TO/W1 SW1/- (medium). I'm assuming W1 from the dam was the problem but the sire didn't have any lethal genes (I thought).

Roan and W1 can be rarely lethal when at maximum white factor. SW1 boosts the white factor and would probably be what pushed it over the edge. W1 is potentially lethal with everything but not even 100% lethal with its self.

Huh. That’s unlucky, is what that is.
The kit genes gave you 20 “white points.” The splash likely took you to like 25. The foal must have gotten an extensive white factor, causing a multiplier of like 5, which would be 125, which is over 100, so the foal dies.
Picture white factor like a multiplier. None (no multiplier.) Minimal (something low like x1.1), light (x2), moderate (x3), large (x4), and extensive (x5).
I just learned that w1/r at extensive white factor can’t cause death, so my math would have to be adjusted to make r/w1 = 95 at extensive white factor and then the splash does that last little bit over.
All of these numbers are made up in my head and I could be totally wrong about all of this. I don’t think I am, but that means nothing.
ps: Abhean — thanks for posting that sheet. I hadn’t seen the numbers before, just the colors.Thanked by 1efalater -

"I just learned that w1/r at extensive white factor can’t cause death"
This is always lethal (other than foundations and chimeras which are special cases) Search above shows no w1/r extensive horses in the game.
Identical search but large wf

Huh. Thanks for the clarity. Learn something new every day.
