How do you do your pastures each season?
-
For those of you with minimal pasture space, how do you do your breedings each season?
To my knowledge, straws used are roughly 0 days pasture bonus, embryos are roughly 15 days pasture bonus and of course aiming for 30 days pasture bonus is the best way to go to get the Best foal quality. I’ve been doing embryos for the higher papered mares and a select few foundation mares. I currently have the primary pasture (60 acres) and a 10 acre pasture. I have a bootstrap/show stock herd of about 40 mares at the moment (working on more) and I have my Van Gogh mares at around 20 mares at the moment. Should I just try to shoot for 15 days each? What’s the best way to do this without buying another pasture? -
Straws are the same as 15 day pasture bonus. Im not sure if embryos have a bonus. To use all available slots a pasture has for breeding, you use your pasture at 13 days, and then breed it the second time on the 26/27th.
That would give even days to both groups. If you breed at 15 days then the next breeding would be 12 day bonus, if used twice a month. Or you can breed at a full 30 and take whatever time there is for group two.
On my one pasture account on forest I just rotate mares each month and only use it once. Or I'll use it for mares with 30 days and then rotate, use it and the following month repeat. So the first batch bred has 30+ pasture days, the second does not. That's also me just breeding a show herd.
Having a bigger account these days I usually breed straws and embryos. However I haven't been breeding much these last few months. There's been a lot going on to add that much breeding each month :)
I don't know if that helped or not. Good luck. -
Does using straws without an embryo get the 25 day pasture bonus?
…wow that would be cheaper. -
No. The only way to get the pasture bonus is with the pasture.
Anything using AI gets you something that is similar to the pasture bonus but isn't actually a pasture bonus. Straws count as AI so you get the AI bonus.Need to contact me? Read this first.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

But making embryos and using straws has the same non-pasture bonus?
-
Yes. All artificial breeding does.Need to contact me? Read this first.

I'll be honest and say that I don't really use my pasture. I can feel it though in my mare groups where I mostly do live covers. My SBA pass rate is pretty low compared to my straw and embryo breeding.
At this point I feel like they are also beneficial out of the pasture showing and earning me some daily income. Perhaps when my daily income has increased to a point where I'm not hunting for HBs I would feel more like putting them in pastures.Ramshorn Ranch

Thank you all! I think I’m going to keep my bootstrap/show baby mares in the pasture and get them a 30 day bonus and go from there! I’ll continue doing AI with my Van Gogh mares as there’s not nearly as many yet and go from there!

I normally mix all of my mares together, then I divide them up when I breed. For example I might have two breeding projects in my 60 mare pasture. I’ll leave group 1 in the pasture while temporarily moving group 2 into a barn. Do the breeding real quick, then move group 2 back into the pasture and do that breeding. All in all the mares are never out of the pasture for more than 10 minutes and they don’t lose their bonus unless you leave them out overnight.
