What’s In A Name?
  • I’m curious, how do you name your horses? If you do, that is…

I’ve seen many names that contain codes and info, and others that just keep the horse’s ID.

So tell me, what’s your system?
  • [name I’ve made up for the era] [something I come up with based on parent names or whim] [number of gen] [ranking notes to myself*]

*One s is sup sire. An sa means sup sire AGA the benchmark (BiP or maxed). An sw means superior to sire but worse than benchmark.

I just need to know era, gen, and quality at a glance.

Era 4, gen 3, superior to sire, superior to non-maxed benchmark, worse than maxed.

Edit to reply to the below: I name all my mares and stallions by hand. I often don’t name show horses. I do when they are on the LB because I know unnamed horses annoy Ammit.
  • Stallions and Mares get the RAM prefix. Spayed mares and geldings get an RSH prefix.

I just decided a few days ago that all spayed mares and geldings that are the same age will have the same first word in their name. So all of the show ponies born this month will have RSH Magnetic _____ for their names. With the blank being filled out by the random name generator tool.
Next month I’ll come up with a word that starts with N. So all of the show babies next month will be RSH Nifty ______ or something like that.

For intact mares and stallions I hand name all of them with the exception of foundations that I will sometimes utilize the name generator to either name them outright or give me some name inspiration.
-Rank Special Foundations usually get a name that is somehow related to the name of their rank. I have a Yule Log stud named RAM Winters Night, a Dove of Peace Mare named RAM Double Dutch Dove, etc.
-Random Foundations get a random name with the help of the name generator. RAM ___________.
-Lined horses I try to name them something related to the name of one or both parents. For example I have a stud named RAM Wicked Remedy who has parents named RAM Pomegranate Cure and RAM Criminal Daisy. Wicked is associated with criminal and remedy is associated with Cure. The associations can sometimes be a little loose, I’ll admit.

  • All of my breeding horses start with LH followed by their generation and then paper level (i.e. LH4S ) and one random word from the generator. If it's a foal I really like for I'll give them a second random word or pick a unique name to make them stand out in my list.

Finally I end the name with either SUP or AGA for the comparison results. Now that eras are more of a thing I've been tacking the era on at the end but I'm not sure I like that setup. I also need to find a new way to indicate double and triple stars. So anyway, it's an evolving process :)) I do love seeing other people's ideas here though, hopefully I can figure out a new system for this new updates!

My show horses are just Show # and for regular foundations I usually just do RS # or ExPerf # with sometimes a descriptive word for the color or specific rank special.
  • My system is kind of wonky. Every foal I leave as their numbers. I don't know when, but when I had multiple groups, I started abbreviating names and combining the parent names. So AS is related to Albert's Soul. A dear dear horse to my heart. BA is Blue Arrow, a blue axiom stud I used. It often is paired with Petty cause Petty Shadow was my very first cyan axiom mare. There's also SB which is Smokey N the Bandit, again often paired with Petty. I sometimes still blend parent names.

When it comes to my Fjord line it's the generation with color and then random name. I received some gifts from the gifting in December, so I have kept them. For my geldings and spayed mares I let the random generator do the work. I often keep rank specials as foals, later I decide on a name. Sometimes I use random generator, other times I come up with it.

I'm sure there are many many more minute details to my naming system, but that's the gist of things. It's cumulated into the random name generator and mixtures of parents names and what line they have come from. What stud and stud line they're from. My fantasy group is quite mixed and often interbred. I used to care more, but I'm starting to care less. I still care a bit more when it comes to my Albert's Soul Line and my chocolate palomino and liver Chestnuts lines.
