Gray and Silver Genes
-
This new create is a chimera and had gray on both strands. The picture shows her with 1 strand of Gray removed, so her original body color was really dark, which is what I loved. Why did she lighten so much, by just deleting the gray?

Thanks so much.Forest Server - Chapel Hill Farm. ID# 54714 (Basic account)

Grey is a hyperpigmentation. It causes super bright colors in foals. Then the hair cell dies (or whatever I’m not sure on this part I just know it happens) and then the hair goes from hyperpigmentations to grey.
I dunno what happened here but I suspect the second grey was hyperpigmentating the sty or DP or something.
I know hyperpigmentation then Grey. I’m shaky on the mechanics. -
Darn, I loved that dark color. Thanks for responding and that does make sense. I will take the other strand of grey off and just go with the silver.Forest Server - Chapel Hill Farm. ID# 54714 (Basic account)

I think that is why a lot of Abheans GMTed foundations have grey but also the grey reduction gene. The benefit of the hyperpigmentation for a rich color with the slower greying process.Ramshorn Ranch
