Hey everyone! I'm new to the game. I guess I'll follow the prompts to introduce myself.
1) How long have you liked horses? Several years! I rode for about 15 years then had to quit after I moved to a new place.

2) Why did you join HAJ? I really just joined out of curiosity. I miss doing horse-y things so I thought this would be fun.

3) What kind of pets do you own? I have 3 cats and 3 dogs as well as 2 betta fish.

4) What is something you are confused about with the game? Mostly just how to do all the tests for your horses to determine their capabilities.

5) Tea or Coffee? Coffee - cold brew only

Hi @Honeyluv2023! Welcome to the game.

As a new player, when you first create a horse it already has points when it is "born" (aka created). New foals that you have bred don't have that bonus. Also, foals don't train, you can enter them in shows and they will earn a few points but the places are basically a coin toss. When the next new month starts, and the foals/yearlings turn 2 they can start training and earning more points.

Value depends on what you are looking for. A stallion with every color of the rainbow, or one that throws foals with better Performance Testing scores (PT), etc., or any number of other things people breed for!

Love the game, totally obsessed even though I’ve never been a ‘horse girl.’ Don’t get me wrong, horses are awesome! I just wasn’t intrigued by them until I started looking for breeding/genetics games and found this one. Great community doesn’t hurt either!

Thank you, @Confluence Ranch for the helpful pointers. I am curious about how long I can keep horses in my pastures and what is the benefit to this? Also, when breeding a foal with one of the monthly gene offerings such as this month's Onyx gene for example, I can't seem to select any of my horses to breed with the Onyx option and then check out in the cart as I know there is a real monetary fee for these genes. I know I must be missing something obvious.

@Sparklegurl411, you can keep your mares and stallions in your pasture as long as you like (once they reach 20 years old they can no longer breed.) The benefit is for breeding ability. Mares accumulate bonus 'breeding' type points for every day they are in the pasture, up to 30 days. If you think of the horse as having a range of 'breeding scores" the pasture bonus increases the chance that the foal will have a score of it's own that comes from the higher end of it's mama's 'range'. The downside is that horses in the pasture cannot show. If you have a mare that was showing as a 2 year old (since they have to be at least 3 before you can put them in the pasture) and she earned some points from showing, she will keep those points, and they will count towards your nightly showing bonus, but she won't get any more since she can't show if she lives in the pasture. There are ways around this, that sacrifice some of the bonus, but that gets more and more detailed. You should also train those mares every week, so that if and when they move back into the barns they will be better show horses.

The other benefit of pastures is that the mares are MUCH cheaper to breed. It costs 500 HBs to breed pasture horses as opposed to 1000 HBs for horses in the barns (using live cover)

Genes: You have to own a license to have or breed intact horses with certain genes. If you don't own the license you can own spayed or gelded horses with the gene, but not breeding stock. To get the gene (Onyx, in this case) you have to keep an eye on the Roving Gene sales and when Onyx becomes available you have to buy the license (with real money, only, via PayPal) and put it on a horse that you own that meets the guidelines (foundation, never bred, etc). Once you have that license you can buy and sell horses with that particular gene, and breed the horse that you used to get the license. You only need one horse with the gene to get you started. You will need to decide if you want to pay for 2 strands (copies) of the gene to make the horse homozygous for that gene, or just one, to make the horse heterozygous.

@VoodooRangeress5, You can buy HBs with real/PayPal money. Go to the Upgrade section on the left side menu and select Buy Upgrades. Select the Game Cash & Tokens tab and choose which level cash Infusion you want to buy. Good Luck!

@VodooRangeress5, If you look at the top of your page, next to the little envelope icon, there is another icon that has a circle with a head in it. If you click on that one it will show game time, which is Eastern Standard Time.
