Top Producing Stallion
  • I have a bunch of e3 stallions and I want to get rid of some. Can I use the top producing era board as a tool for that? What determines what makes the top producing stallion? Foal PT scores? How many foals pass SBA? Maaaagic?

Thank you for your wisdom, guesses, and humor.
  • Are you wanting to compare your stallions against each other and get rid of the ones that are not as good of producers?

I would think that you can either pay to comparison test the stallions against each other (which can get expensive). Another way to compare them against each other would be to test breed them and compare which stallions have foals with a better average PT score across their crop. Foal PT score is linked to breeding ability of their parents.

As far as the top producing board I believe a stallion has to have a certain amount of living foals to be eligible for the board. And once they hit that number of foals their very best foals are looked at to determine their production success. I can't remember what the exact numbers are but it's something like once they have 10 foals, then their top 10 foals are taken and looked at. So a stallion that has 100 foals, only the top 10 of his foals are averaged to determine his placing on the board, while a stallion that has 10 foals will have all 10 foals looked at to determine his placing. I am not sure if the foals are evaluated based on PT, breeding ability, or a combination of both.

  • Right. The era 3 leaderboard does not match the rankings of the AFPT. The below horse is the 12th top producing stallion in era 3. He has a higher AFPT than my other five stallions ranked above him. Does the top producing stallion measure something else?

    Era 3 leaderboard: https://mesa.huntandjump.com/clubs.php?club=56

12th highest producing stallion, AFPT 9.92

2nd highest producing stallion, AFPT 9.68

    Winters Rocky Road

    What am I missing?
  • The rankings have always been a little bit of a mystery, but I'm pretty sure there is some formula that combines both PT and paper level. Winters Endless Watch has two yellow papered foals whereas Winters Rocky Road has all B/red which would be my guess on the difference in rankings.
  • Thank you. Thinking about papers + PT is helpful. If that is the guess, then I guess I can rely on that ranking for culling purposes. I don’t think I’m going to breed this many foals again until October (I’ve been breeding the mares from my sea pony search) so I figure it’s a good time to use these metrics and cut a few stallions.
  • I think that if you paper all your stallions and sort them by paper level in the search, the best stallions should be the ones that show up first on the search page.
  • Nope, I just double checked and that does not work. So never mind, then!
