Removing White Spotting
  • I was going to modify a horse and remove white spotting. One horse when I clicked to remove the "M", the dropdown box only give me an option to change it to W8. I had another horse that had W8, and the dropdown box only give me an option to change it to W1. There doesn't seem to be the option "-". What am I missing?

  • Do you have a link to the horse in question?
  • This is the first horse. The Gene Mod Treatment only seems to offer to change M to W8

This is the second horse. The Gene Mod Treatment only seems to offer to change W8 to W1

  • I had another quick question about White Spotting. I bred a stallion to 10 mares with no white spotting. ALL 10 foals acquired the White Spotting. Is it that dominant, or was it just the luck of the draw?

  • You can only change a lined horses genes based on what the parents have.
For the gene sequence, the first allele comes from the sire and the second from the dam (example: Sty/- means the sty came from the sire and - from the dam)

So for the first foal, the kit M came from the sire who is homozygous for kit genes (W8/M) meaning those are the only genes the foal can have there.

The second horse is the same.

  • And it should not be possible that the GMT lab for the second horse is saying it can change to W1 because the sire does not have that gene
