Boost Question
-
I have a 2nd generation "A" rated stallion. I would like to give him a 5% boost to try and move him up to Star. Of course, this would also boost his foals.
If I breed him to 2nd Generation Blue fillies, is there any concern that they would not pass SBA, due to him now being so much higher? I haven't done much boosting, so I want to make sure I am not shooting myself in the foot.
Would it be better to just give him a 1 or 2% boost for the better foals?
Thanks.Forest Server - Chapel Hill Farm. ID# 54714 (Basic account)

The 5% boost will get you the best foals. Better breeders make better foals period. Decide if it is more important to you to get better foals or more intact foals. ;)Need to contact me? Read this first.

So when @pestilenttempest left I was able to use their fabulous 3rd gen star for a few seasons (wasn't boosted but came from boosted foundations).
LH3S The Right Moves SUP
I breed 125 foals and only one passed SBA and was superior to their dam/sire

This was the one superior mare and as you'll noticed she has been bred 7 times and all of her foals are altered.
LH4G Scholars
Anyway in this case I found introducing a large boosted horse in the middle of my herd was tough when I wanted to follow the same rules of SBA and superior. Looking back there may have been a few AGA foals that I hand altered that I probably shouldn't have because an AGA would have still been better than some of my regular 4Gs. -
One more (perhaps better) example for your research, @starburstfarms 5% boosted this 3rd gen A papered and he still was not star papered (he must have been super duper close though)
I Struck Gold A3G
They gave me this mare who was originally an AGA stud and I swapped to a mare. However, her dams side is much lower quality and I actually have several gold papered 4th gens from non boosted lines so it wasn't nearly as much of a shock to my herd.
LH4B Liver Me Timber
And out of 15 foals I have gotten 3 beautiful 5th gen superior golds

So two notes here
1. If your second gen A papered is not from boosted foundations, a 5% might not make him a star
2. This is actually a better example of a horse boosted mid line which is what you were asking about. I would definitely spend some time looking through some of I Struck Golds foals. I know there were a lot that were AGA, swapped to different genders or 1% boosted.Thanked by 1WensumValleyPonies -
Oh my goodness, there is a lot to consider. I'm going to do more research. Thank you for the prompt responses. It was exactly what I needed.Forest Server - Chapel Hill Farm. ID# 54714 (Basic account)

In the past on Forest server, I accidentally boosted a 4g stallion up a whole paper level he was star out of yellow/C foundations which is possible to get a 4g star however difficult. He ended up being 5g quality. I struggled to find a son who tested superior to him. Then I had a huge issue of my stallions being levels above the mare’s quality. It wasn’t noticeable at the 4th and 5th gen foals. But once I hit 6-7 gen I found it was impossible for me to get superior mares, and foals that passed BA. I had a huge mare lag, so much so that in then end I sold that stallion and culled all my horses 5g and up. Now I found a new 4g stallion more in line with my mare quality, which I also made a point to improve.
So now I am extremely picky about how much I boost a horse. That unevenness is very difficult to fix in a line. -
I truly appreciate everyone's perspective on this question. I did do more research and with BlaxkDiamond's additional input, I am going to use the one stallion that I had already boosted. I am going to try some bootstrapping with a small number of specific mares. I will not use him on all my other mares. This really helped, thanks so much.Forest Server - Chapel Hill Farm.
