How do you Cull show horses?
-
Hi!
I’ve got an absolutely out of hand and unproductive show pony herd that I need major culling advice on!
Current herd is basically everything I’ve bred that didn’t pass SBA. No limits on what I kept and didn’t keep… they all got tossed into a barn.
I fear some of them need to go as they have VERY few points and could replaced by better ponies but I don’t even know where to start!
Can someone give me hard guidelines for what needs to go?ID# 1180 -
I rarely cull show horses, mostly because if I kept them as babies it's because I really liked how the looked, favorite parents ect. But when I do cull, I look at the horses in their peer groups, so for examle all the 5 year olds. Who is slacking in the points department? Then look at why. Are they in the bottom of their class, do they have poor consistency, ect. I will cull the slackers to make room for more. I will usually try to sell them for their current payout price incase there are new players looking for show horses to start with, then if they just sit on the market they go to auction.
I know there is probably a better way to do it, but thats what I have done since I started.-Sam

I have a few different accounts I run so I don't always have time to individually evaluate each show horse I cull. This is a longer explanation but the actual method does not take too much time.
Owner: your ID
Gender: Geldings and Spayed Mares
Age: Older than 12
Advanced Sort By: Points This Year
Bonus: if you have your show ponies in separate barns, search by barn ID so you can select in search and mass auction from the barn page!
I try to run this search at the end of a month so I have an idea of how many points my horses have earned this game year. I pull up the search, go to the last page, and cull everyone who has earned less than about 20 points that month and who has less than about 900 points total.
My theory behind this is that it's important not only to have horses that hold a lot of points to maintain your current bonus; but also important to have horses that are good point earners to continue to help your daily bonus grow. The exchange rate for points to hbs is about 11 points per hb, so horses who are earning less than 20 points are only growing your show bonus by 2 hbs each month.
The reasoning for culling horses older than 12 is:
1) because most horses that age have stopped training (unless they have really high PT scores) and thus stopped advancing up the showing levels. They are likely to continue earning the same amount of points per week until they age out. On the other hand, a 5yo who is not earning as many points as their peers is still training and will continue to advance up the showing levels. They might not be a great earner now, but give them a month or two and they will establish themselves and hit their stride, the same as real life horses :)
2) if you auction horses older than 10, you are paid their current lifetime payout as long as it is above 2500hbs. You don't get this benefit with younger horses so it's not worth it to cull them.ID #242

I cull show horses the same way Egret does. However I make sure I am showing those horses twice a week every week of the month. Example this month I have shown horses rather haphazardly so I won’t be doing any culling this month. I’ll save it for the end of next month.

What is everyone’s best advice on replacing the culled show ponies? Where do you find your best? Breeding? Buying?
Thank you guys so much for all the culling advice!
Now to weed through all the show poniesID# 1180 -
I either replace them with pointed creates I find on the sale boards or in the auction, or if I need quick cash I fill the stalls with mass created mares that are pasture bred and then auctioned with their foals.ID #242
