The game tracks how many copies of the gene license you have. If you don't have the gene, buy one copy of the gene and then gift it you will lose your copy and license. This is only for the gift exchange it does not apply to selling, auctioning or horses passing away. It was a new mechanic set up specifically for the exchange but also created so that people weren't giving away free licenses.

Before you gift the horse it will give you a warning and show how many copies of the gene license you have. I don't think there is any other way to see the number of copies but I could be wrong on that
