Advice on using pastures
  • Hi, I'm new as of this month, and I'm still trying to figure out pasturing bonuses.

I've spent the month gathering a couple of exceptional-producing stallions and around 20 mares, some of whom are exceptional producers and some of whom are just pretty (and have PTs in at least the upper 9s). Would the pasturing bonus raise my high-9s mares to the 10.4 PTs of my exceptionally-perfect mares? Am I better off using my 10 pasture slots to improve my less-perfect but interesting mares, or to improve my exceptional mares? How much of a bonus should I expect from pasturing, anyway?

Also, do I still get showing-bonus HBs from the pastured mares? I need the income - it's time to start saving for the next breeding season, and I don't have a lot of HBs.

    Thanks for advice!
  • There is excellent information that answers many of your questions in the FAQ User Guide. Scroll down to Breeding 101 and click Pastures.

PT score and breeding ability are two entirely different things and nothing you do will change a horse's PT score. Yes, your mares will still get their showing bonus hbs, but they will not be able to compete in shows so cannot potentially increase their bonus. To get the full bonus you need to have your mares in the pasture for 30+ days. All horses have a breeding 'range'. By putting a mare in pasture she will move towards her top range as each day goes by.

If you have any more questions after looking at the FAQ guide then please ask them. We love to help out new players. :)

  • A little more detail on PT scores vs breeding ability -

A horses PT score is completely unrelated to it's breeding ability (which is measured by paper level). The only thing that impacts how good the offspring will be is the horses breeding ability. A horse with a high breeding ability can produce both strong breeders and strong showers, although not every foal will be both. (Side note that inconsistency is inheritable)

-Exceptional Producers are guaranteed to be excellent breeders (red papered), but PT scores vary wildly
-Exceptional Showers are guaranteed to be excellent showers but breeding ability will vary
    - Exceptionally Perfect are both good showers (10.4 PT) and excellent breeders (red papered)

As minimum mentioned, pasture bonuses only impact breeding ability and the max bonus is 30 days.

Personally - I strive for improved quality with each generation so I use my pasture for "the best of the best". I only have ExPro or ExPerf in my pastures.

As far as showing goes, like minimum mentioned, you will receive your daily bonus from mares in pasture but they can not show or increase that bonus. With only 10 pasture slots, I would worry much about that. Just pick your favorite breeders and keep them in pasture!
