Bootstrapping Advice
-
While I have a grip on the general concept behind bootstrapping being to quickly raise the quality of your stock through uneven breeding for better showing, I'm somewhat lost as what to start with.
If I wanted to keep bootstrap lines all in-house and start with foundations, for example, at what point does bootstrapping become more advantageous than even breeding? :-/she/her
Breeding Projects:
• Tall DP drafts with low white factor and lots of dapples
Future Interests:
• Chinchilla satin with chrome
• Platinum dark bays -
Bootstrapping on Mesa is still a growing art. Most of the studs around are still A's though that quality is getting better every month.
Bootstrapping is as simple a breeding a better horse to one of lower quality to get better quality foals faster. It also happens a lot in just breeding for color. You can pick your goal to keep from the cross.
I personally have a g2 son of a boosted foundation that I am running against foundation mares and their daughters til I find a better stud. So far it's not a big increase, but a year from now I should be throwing nice show ponies to help fund my even lines.
You can always pick the best stud in your own stable and just breed him to all the mares for a season to grab off the cream of the crop to be your starting bootstrap mares.Known as Seaswell on HJ1(237808) & HJ2(45120)

I boosted every generation of an even line and then breed the stallion back to lower quality mares, personally. If you look at this boy
4g These Artful Moves
He is technically 4g, but with full boosting along the way his grade is very high. Now that I have such a high grade he will be bred back to gold mares (mostly) to pump them up through the ranks. I have done this with every generation thus far.
His father was bred back to uneven mares, and his father before him. But I kept a single even line to get the higher quality studs. :) there’s tons of ways to do it, mine relies on expensive boosts but you can do the same thing without boosts it would just take a lot longer to get to this quality. This line had a natural born 3g star that I boosted to mid-tier star. I always have mare lag on both here and hj2, but I prefer it over stagnating stallions.
If I wasn’t boosting I would just breed the two best tested every generation together and aim for a pair of superiors to breed together. Foundation stallion a + foundation mare a = foals 1 + 2 superior. (One mare one stallion)
Breed foals 1 + 2 together to her superior pair 3 + 4.
Breed stallion 1 to any other mares of his generation to boost them up to his level. Mares must test superior to their mother to stay intact.
Breed foals 3 + 4 together to get pair 5 + 6.
Breed stallion 3 with all mares up to #2. Etc. this will bring them up to around #4 quality. Mares must test superior to their mother to stay intact.
This just keeps going endlessly.
This way you will always have a slight mare lag as your mares age up, but you keep breeding up the pts and breeding ability. Let me know if that doesn’t make sense.Thanked by 1Silverwater -
I recently read this thread of Bluegrass which was super interesting and I highly recommend reading it before you start bootstrapping.

It appears that some of the best show horses are in that 10.4-10.7 followed by the 13+ PTs. Basically meaning the best show string can be created simply from breeding red/B papered foundations at least until you get a stud in the upper 13-14's. It seems like bootstrapping when you start out on an established server is a good option for new players but not as beneficial on newer servers.
Just food for thought :)

Personally I don’t like bootstrapping for show horses. I tried it on bluegrass and that account is still struggling in the show horse/daily bonus department three years later, and I switched to even breeding over a year ago. Where’s the account that has done even breeding from the beginning is making double the bluegrass account, and they were made at the same time.
The only reason I’m contemplating doing it on this server is because I recently realized breeding a foal for high PT and color is fun rewarding and less work than even breeding. However I fully anticipate either breeding a bunch of 2g foals or buying foundations with points as my main show horses.Thanked by 1Silverwater -
Thank you everyone for the insights! I've always bred evenly in the past, but was considering trying to build up better show stock through bootstrapping on this newer account. It sounds like the best decision to reach that goal may be to continue breeding evenly for now, since I'm still working with foundations and boosting is out of budget at the moment.
I really appreciate all of the tips and time everyone took to respond! It's interesting to hear what different strategies there are for uneven breeding as well, I may still give it a whirl out of curiosity if mushroom comes along for some colour :D
