Breeding for High PT
-
I know a lot of advice says to unlink breeding ability and PT score from one’s mind, but what if I want to breed for both superior breeding ability and increasing PT scores? If a foal is superior in comparison testing to its parent but has a lower PT score is it likely to produce foals with better scores or not? Or, if breeding a horse that is worse compared to its parent but has a better PT score - is it still able to produce good show horses?
-
A very confusing topic and I will try my best to explain what I understand, but everytime one of these threads pop up I feel like I learn something new :))
A horses PT score is completely unrelated to it's breeding ability. The only thing that impacts how good the foal will be is the horses breeding ability. A horse with a high breeding ability can produce both strong breeders and strong showers, although not every foal with be both. So if you strive to increase your breeding ability with each generation, your average foal PT will also increase with every generation. Some foals will be good showers and some will be good breeders and some may be both.
So with your examples:
1. "If a foal is superior in comparison testing to its parent but has a lower PT score is it likely to produce foals with better scores or not?"
If a horse tests superior to it's parents it is more likely to produce better foals regardless of it's PT score
2. "If breeding a horse that is worse compared to its parent but has a better PT score - is it still able to produce good show horses?"
Same idea as above, a horse that tests worse than it's parents will likely produces worse foals
Hopefully that helps! If anyone has anything to add or notices something wrong, please feel free to correct me lol -
Thanks!
